WE had a chaise lounge in a living room for quite a while that my wife decided to replace with 2 chairs. It was still in reasonable shape and I wanted to pass it on to someone who might get use of it, instead leaving it out in the rain, stickered for the trash collectors. So, I thought I'd find out if a student at the nearby university could tell me where other students were most likely to find and take it for their own.

I was with my dogs in my van, having just walked them on trails in the woods by the U, when I came to an intersection where a female student was. I tried calling out to ask her about that, but one of my dogs started up a racket, I couldn't hear her, and I gave it up. I tried again a little later when I saw another female walking across a parking lot. I pulled up to within about TWENTY YARDS of her. Again my dog starts up a racket, and I started yelling at him to SHUT THE FUCK UP! The student looks a little disturbed when I look back at her. AGAIN with the dog. Next time I look up, the student is RUNNING AWAY.

At home later my wife gets a call from the campus police. I figure it's about the girl running away and just launch into the above explanation. They asked me to come down the next day to make and sign a statement. Next day I did that.

And, as is true, the detective, after taking my statement, explains to me about a university environment and a strange older man driving up on unknown young females to ask...slightly odd questions, and then shouting at his dog. All true.

Then it occurred to me that it's very like a woman going to a BAD PART OF TOWN, dressed TO ATTRACT. People used to say such a woman was ASKING FOR TROUBLE, and deserves less care and concern if she finds it. And, now, telling a woman something like that is BLAMING THE VICTIM. She shouldn't have to worry about where she goes, or how she dresses or behaves. It's not her fault if some guy acts badly.

Likewise, I shouldn't have to worry about asking a strange woman a simple, innocent question from 20 yards away.. Only, we haven't gotten to the point where men are free from the same general set of rules we've long had for interactions between men and women.

Thus, the lesson is fortified: freedom for women only is the same as equality in the minds of too many of them.

Yeah, I know shouting at my dog really added to her alarm. But, she called the cops because some guy was yelling at his barking dog to shut up?!
