Brown University has removed research from its website which hypothesised that teenagers who came out as transgender were more likely to have friends who were transitioning and were influenced by YouTube videos and social media.

They forgot crazy feminist parents.

Unfortunately, I don't expect that's a prerequisite anymore. I'm sure there are such kids with normal parents.

Kids are on the internet. Kids are on reddit. Reddit worships LGBTWTFBBQ, that subreddit about Ru Paul's show inexplicably shows up on the front page. Tumblr is worse. Here's the edgy cool internet zeitgeist saying how fucking sweet it is to be trans, and cis people can go die in a fire.

Add that to kids' never ending quest to find and be The Thing Parents Don't Understand (which brought us hits like greasers, hippies, skaters, and goths per time), and the result is clear.

Teenage rebellion is wearing pleather boots and bad makeup now.

I know this is a late reply, but I have thought about this post a fair bit and this makes perfect sense. Thanks for bringing it up.

I note that this kind of thinking was around in the 1970s too, so it's something that grandparents were in to - see the botched gender reassignments of that era. Which surely makes it deeply uncool!

I'm starting to think we ought to be talking about them as 'gender' activists, rather than as trans activists.

There are people who advocate for the rights of trans people: equal opportunity, workplace protections, that sort of thing.

Then there are people who are pushing a politicised view of the whole concept of gender; the type who push "37 types of gender", "gender is solely a social construct" etc.

Why this distinction?

A while back I read a reddit comment from a young gay kid who reported feeling pressured in his high school LGBT group to identify as trans.

I also recently read an article about trans politics where the author compares modern 'gender activism' to a cult-like 1970s group.

In a nutshell, she compares psychological manipulation techniques from a cult with modern gender activists; particularly the isolation from regular support.

The problem with the gender activists is, I think, that gender dysphoria is a real and terrible condition. Imagine knowing that your body is wrong. That you ARE a woman, but you have a man's body, frex.

Imagine if that was FORCED on someone. Imagine being coerced into undergoing hormones and surgery to change your gender.

That'd be one classic example of gender dysphoria.

I fully support trans rights and, although it can be controversial on this sub, defend the practice of prescribing hormone blockers to trans kids as it is the scientifically and ethically supported best practice.

That said, the point is I support it for TRANS kids. Ie kids who have dysphoria, not kids who have been pressured into it and who have, per this thread, been persuaded to LIE to medical professionals in order to get a diagnosis.

I already think that way.

Oh hey, I posted that.

This is why we shouldn't have democracy anymore.
