Men's worth shouldn't be attached to just what they do.

This is disgusting. To even have to say that men are necessary implies people consider that an open question.

Masculinity built civilization. Yes there were lumps but the beta men suffered just as much as the women.

To even have to say that men are necessary implies people consider that an open question. In this fucked up world we live in, it is not only a question, but one that most believe the answer is no.

Uhhmmm. Thai here. To be fair there are so many herorines in this incident too. But they didn't get air time on the media. Yup mostly support roles without risks but hard works indeed.

Toxic masculinity = any masculine traits harmful to society or individual men.

So my their own standards men rushing in to danger to save others are toxic.

Yet feminists never take issue with men dying to save women and children. They never use these opportunities to lecture men that their lives are worth too much to risk helping strangers.

I guess they don't oppose all gender roles and feel patriarchy has its place.

Inb4 "so your saying a woman couldn't do this?"

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

no, almost all dive masters and master scuba divers (yes, those are different titles) are male and there has never been even a single female navy seal. the first one to enlist tried in 2017 and dropped out when she thought it was too tough. there is objectively no woman alive who could do this.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, none alive qualified. Whether or not one could do it is impossible to determine.

What does inb4 mean?

"In before", like "I'm posting in this thread before someone says X / it gets locked / it gets deleted".

It's an older internet term. Usually means you can sense that the original post or the thread as a whole is going to be controversial, and you are predicting that someone will very likely respond to it in a particular way.

Articles like this one are much-needed.

Are they really though?

I was much more ambivalent about the whole thing.

It's not just the way she makes it sound like a movie trailer or more accurately - especially as she manages to slip the words Princess and Bride in there - the blurb of a trashy 'cliterature' erotic romance novel:

... society still needs men who have embraced their masculinity and aren’t afraid of danger ...

To quote a line from “The Princess Bride,” “We are men of action. Lies do not become us.” ...

... only the elite Thai Navy SEALs were up to executing it

In fact at times she's so literally gushing when it came to this bit:

Two miles of flooded passageways

I had to double-take for a moment to realise she wasn't talking about what was happening in her underpants. In fact, it almost sounds as if she's going for an allegory of a super-fertile act of conception.

More seriously though, I strongly objected to this here:

The Thai rescue operation was no small task, thus why only the elite Thai Navy SEALs were up to executing it. More than 30 U.S. military personnel from the U.S. Pacific Command and at least three British diving experts also offered their expertise to aid the unit.

Why is this utter bullshit?

Because firstly she neglects to mention the role of Australian Dr Richard 'Harry' Harris altogether. And this despite the fact that, as the BBC reported:

When the Wild Boars football team was located deep inside the cave, after being missing for a week, the Adelaide anaesthetist [i.e. Dr Harris] abandoned his holiday in Thailand and volunteered to help.

He went in to assess the boys' health and stayed with them for three days.

And even though she does try to make a nod to "three British diving experts" she describes them as having simply "offered their expertise to aid the unit" as if they were the wheezy asthmatic boys subbed on the bench shouting feeble encouragement from the dugout to the real men on the field :

why only the elite Thai Navy SEALs were up to executing it

Errr, I don't fucking think so cupcake - as CNN reported (my italics):

The team of international experts included the two British divers who originally found the boys on July 2, Richard "Rick" Stanton and John Volanthen.

"Many people are coming," the divers told the boys, as they perched on a rocky ledge deep within the cave

To not even mention the role of Harris and to give a seriously misleading impression of Stanton and Volanthen's role as hands-off advisors is pretty fucking outrageous.

This is the kind of article that I can only imagine not only induces rage in your average INCEL, but which also entrenches him in the delusion that anyone not called 'Chad' who is under 6' tall, doesn't have a six-pack and who has never held a gun let alone fired one is invisible to women altogether.

Because while Nicole Russell (the Federalist writer) might be claiming to stand up for men, the only men she's apparently standing up for are different flavours of female masturbation fantasies:

Men make up the majority of many industries that are vital to Americans’ safety and the economy: law enforcement, military, construction, engineering, and more

That list reads like a catalogue of sexy role-play costumes for guys - the policeman, the fireman, the builder.

This is a vision of 'men' as big tough guys, with big tough tools, doing big tough things - preferably with their shirts off during a Diet Coke break

What the Thai Navy SEALs did was truly heroic - about that, she is not wrong.

But where I do think she's completely wrong is not just in all but ignoring Harris and the others - whose feats and contributions were just as vital, just as essential - but also to paint the idea that only a particular type of rugged warrior type of man is the only kind of man that counts.

In doing that it makes her little different from those feminists who crack on about toxic masculinity and she's making the same kind of mistake they make too - i.e. ignoring about 80% of the male population.

You are yourself forgetting that there were divers from other countries in addition to Thailand, the USA, Briatain, and Australia, at least from Belgium, Finland, Canada and Denmark.

There were divers and other rescuers from almost two dozen countries. Why does she want to forget the rest? Typical Americentrism from a US writer? Hell, even the word Americentrism is Americentrist, implying that America and the USA are the same.

lol... men are necessary... like we're some kind of slaves!

We don't need to be necessary to anyone! Men are! That is the only sentence you need!
