Saw a bloke wearing a denim skirt in the city centre today. Got all sorts of looks and comments as he strode through the high street just getting on with it. It was a hot day, perhaps he wanted to air out the boys.

Female wears masculine shirt and pants. It's fashion instead.

My wife nearly lost her mind when I discovered how amazingly comfortable yoga pants (er, um, leggings) are. If I'm ever wearing leggings and she wants to go out with me, she asks me to change clothes. (But seriously, one does need to take steps to um, contain the bulge). Also, pro tip: they fit most comfortably with feminine undergarments. Just saying.

I also do like to wear dresses around the house. (Yeah, I know everyone would stare at me if I wore dresses in public and I could lose my job, but around my own house, I can do as I please!

I agree with you that people should be able to wear what they want as a general rule.

I think that there are several reasons why it is generally considered unacceptable for a man to wear a skirt in public.

For starters, skirts are considered sexy, so it's a bit off-putting to many guys to see a member of the same sex wearing one. I think that in that respect, it is fear of homosexuality (and yes, I do believe that many men fear homosexuals in spite of their protests to the contrary).

Another explanation I've heard that I don't really agree with is that in the past, women were considered the inferior of men. Thus, when a woman dressed as a man, or behaved as a man, her act of rebellion against the system actually served to reinforce the notion that the woman is inferior. But for a man to dress as a woman or behave as a woman threatens the notion that the woman is inferior.
