Calling someone a men's rights activist (MRA) is actively used as an insult these days. How did we let it get this bad?

What do you mean "these days"

I was called an MRA almost 6 years ago because I was arguing that slicing parts of baby boys because "muh holy book!" was not a good enough argument.

Also.. what do you mean "let"?

Maybe through some MRAs actively searching for the smallest things that support their view and then mentally feeling good about their perceived moral superiority as seen in these examples:

Also the strawmanning and the toxicity that's in parts of the MRA Movement doesn't makes it look good. Serious activism and a respectful public discussion would certainly help.

Pretty much everything I am is used as an insult by the left. Male, white, straight, libertarian, MRA, agnostic.
