Here in Ontario, Canada, you scan your lottery ticket yourself in a machine or the teller scans it and it literally tells you audibly and visually how much you won plus the ticket you receive also shows your winnings. Sounds like they need something like that.

This happened to me once and to this day I still think the woman scammed me out of thousands if not the winning ticket .she acted all weird and said I had won ,but only €20.I was delighted and didnt think much of it .but when I asked could I see the ticket I wanted to take the numbers down for next time she said she had thrown it in the bin and didnt know which one it was .all very strange .I left .I walked for 10 mins thinking about how she had acted .I went back to the shop to confront her had ask for a receipt for the win .she was disgusted that I was saying she scammed me but still couldnt produce a ticket or receipt .I left because she got so angry .I went back a few weeks later .she was gone .she never worked there again .I still think I was scammed and it makes me sick .

In Canada by law they have self ticket checks at convenience stores and such to prevent this. Or if there isn't and it's behind the register the machine makes a sound that goes Wahoo and displays the winning amount if the clerk scans it.

I'm pretty sure that happened to me when I was a kid. I had my grandma buy me a crossword and it won $500 by my 10 year old calculations. But I had taken into the gas station and said it wasn't a winner and left it there. Literally have no idea if I did win or no tho
