Tinder and I think OKCupid both did studies into how each gender rates the opposite gender, they found that it was the female users that were insanely fixed on looks. And I really do mean insane, it's completely disproportional.

There's been other studies as well, I think even before this.

While I do disagree with the reasons behind it, a lot of people think it's biological, but I disagree, I think it's the culture that has produced this. I won't go into the reasons why, suffice to say in the nature vs nurture argument I'm on the nurture side of it. A really quick example would be that if you look at other countries, in some places in the world the more attractive males are the fat ones. And also if you look at history, what attracts people to each other is like fashion, it keeps changing.

Also I think men have always criticised things like make up quite heavily in culture, they have also laughed at women's fashion (high heel shoes that break your legs for example). They laugh about these things because they don't care about them, they laugh because they're impractical, and men care about practical things more.

So in the world we have in the West today, women are trying to attract men with things women like, it's not really surprising that they're failing miserably at it and the birth rate is falling.

Yes! I saw that OkCupid post. Although I am aware of criticisms that users of OkCupid are not a random sample, also, the trust level of profiles is very low. The most important objection is that: sure women have very high standards of beauty, but they certainly are willing to compromise to sleep with men they consider to be so ugly. Which supports the theory put forth in the article.

The talk about culture is complicated by there being two distinct reproductive strategies for both sexes. When looking into the past is the culture swinging back and forth or is the focus on the two groups shifting back and forth?

If makeup and clothing can raise your confidence and/or social status then it's arguably practical if not obviously so.

Certainly, women try to attract men with things women like, but the same it also true: men try to attract women with things men like.
