Colby Bruno, a lawyer at the Victim Rights Law Center in Boston, said that a few years ago, about 5% of her cases arising from alleged campus sexual assaults involved an accuser facing a defamation suit; now a little more than half do.

In other words, this is a new phenomenon, not something that has been happening, and therefore must be in response to something else.

Self-defense is retaliation only when the underlying assumption is the person defending himself is the attacker's to abuse however she sees fit. That's gross objectification
