Dowry and demand for dowry is a real problem in India.

In almost all of India, the husband/his family are the ones who ask for dowry from the wife/her family. (I'm told there is somewhere where its the other way round but dont know for sure).

Officially asking for/collecting Dowry is illegal and has been for a long time. but like any well entrenched tradition/cultural norm, it still exists.

Nowadays (if dowry is collected) its done in 1 of 2 ways. Either the money/gifts go to the family, or the money/gifts go to the newly married couple (obviously there is a lot of overlap since Indian culture is one where a lot of families still live together (3/4 generations under 1 roof is not uncommon)).

The issue comes where Dowry is demanded by the man/his family as a condition of marrying the woman. Because marry a woman off is seen as hard and a burden (usually in less developed places), families will reluctantly agree to it. The giving of dowry is often a condition that has to be met on the day of marriage. The penalty for not paying up being public shame and dishonour and the marriage not going through.

Sometimes the bride's family will pay part of the demanded dowry and promise to pay the rest at a later date, when this doesn't happen quickly enough, the groom/his family get abusive. This is a big problem that exists

Cases where the above mentioned happens is often kept quite and the bride/her family quietly suffers.

The laws that have been put in place to prevent the demand of dowry and this post wedding abuse is nowadays often abused by some women to guarantee divorce and/or hurt the guy. This is also a big problem and is getting bigger

The problem of dowry being demanded does need to be address and some type of law would help IMHO but that doesn't mean the law can't be abused.
