Are men seen as liars once they've been convicted of a crime?

I mean, yeah in general, but that's not what's happening here I don't think. You need to look a little deeper.

People just don't care about men. It's kind of glib, but it's true. If a man kills someone, he's just a monster and we lock up monsters. We don't care why he did it overmuch, except as necessary to determine level of monster (murder 1, murder 2, man 1, etc), so the mental illness aspect doesn't come into play. "He planned to kill em for two days and did it, so that's Murder 1". We don't dig deeper.

When a woman kills someone, we care why. What could drive her to it? What's her motivations? What pressures led this event? Is there anything we could have done? Etc.

It's in that search for "why" we discover the mental illness. It's because we care enough to find out.

At least, that's my opinion.
