I definitely think this sentence was way too light, but something to consider when considering why: the potential impact this might have on cases of involved genuinely-supportive assisted suicide.

Not saying gender bias wasn't a factor here, but there has been a lot of noise made by groups like the ACLU about how the precedent of this ruling might negatively affect future cases of assisted suicide, which they are currently trying to get create legal protections for. As someone who supports that cause, I have to admit I was worried about this ruling as well.

That being said, I think we need to be able to tell the difference between cases in which someone was being genuinely supportive and those in which the "support" was actually malicious. In my opinion, this case is so obviously in the latter category that this sentence is ridiculous. That girl shouldn't see the light of day for at least 5 years.

But...before people go on a tear about gender discrimination, keep in mind that this is a groundbreaking case, meaning there are few-to-no cases available for comparison. Gender discrimination may indeed have happened, but it's impossible to prove at this point.
