You know, reading stuff like this is always a bit...strange for me. I've known for a long while that communication technology has shifted our self organizing capabilities into high gear. Never before in the history of humanity have we had this kind of immediacy of access to information and communication, so naturally new societal behaviors will manifest. The Tea Party, sure. The "Muslim Spring" is another great example.

Sadly, the polarization of politics is yet another example. The downside of the immediacy is that people are in a rush to post their thoughts whereas in times gone by they'd have had time to refine them in their heads. Once they post them, however, our natural inclination is to stick to it, because it's ours. We own it forever more.

So to see college professors, supposedly highly intelligent and educated people, slowly catch up with me...again...is a bit surreal.

And their fears about the polarization and social media show just how far behind me they are. We, as a society, tend to go through maturation phases. Social media is no different, you can already see it happening. Where one might have originally accepted something online as gospel 10 years ago, now they're a bit more cautious. I predict we'll start seeing the end of political polarization within the next 5 years, probably 3, as more and more people get outrage burnout and realize that no, the sky isn't falling. Trump, to his credit, has certainly hastened that timeline.

Both men believe something has gone wrong on college campuses––that a strain of illiberalism advanced by a vocal minority of students is ascendant; that it is substantively wrong; and that most administrators and faculty are averse to speaking up.

Good fucking grief. And these people are supposedly indepenent thinkers?
