In a 1982 letter to the Times, she wrote that since men have no legal power to either veto or compel an abortion, it is only just that they shouldn’t have to pay for a woman’s unilateral decision to bring the pregnancy to term: “Or, put another way, autonomous women making independent decisions about their lives should not expect men to finance their choice.”

DeCrow also championed men’s rights as fathers, arguing for a “rebuttable presumption” of shared custody after divorce. She worked with the Fathers’ Rights Association of New York State and joined the board of the Children’s Rights Council, a pro-joint custody group. More recently, she was on the board of Leading Women for Shared Parenting. (In an ironic twist, one of her fellow LW4SP board members was her old nemesis Phyllis Schlafly, whom DeCrow frequently debated on college campuses in the 1980s and 1990s.)

Again, DeCrow framed her position as a feminist one, arguing that getting men more involved in parenting was essential if women were to achieve equality in other pursuits.

holy crap. An actual adult who thinks about responsibilities as well as rights. No wonder she was outcast.

There are a lot of feminists who share these beliefs. As a woman who comes from a blended family and dated a man with a child, I've seen first hand how unequal custody laws effect father's and their daughter's relationship with them. But this isn't necessarily the fault of the mothers. It's the fault of antiquated laws written by antiquated leaders. The laws were written to favor the mother when being a mother was a woman's only job. Women's status in the world has improved but laws have not caught up and now men are losing valuable time and relationships with their children. It's a shame. The best way to fix it is to take legal action, get involved with state and local politics, and fix this mess for men and their children.

The correct path to empowerment is responsibility.

The wrong path, and the feminist path to empowerment, is legal and societal discrimination.

This is why when people say MRAs are a reaction to feminism, I don't correct them. They're right. The original MRAs were those feminists who actually believed in equality and were shunned, outcast, and attacked for doing so.

After 50 years of the feminist movement doing that to their egalitarians, it makes me suspect of every person who still chooses to claim the label.
