I'm a trans woman who came out to myself at 32. Before then, I first saw men's rights as a vital and necessary compliment to feminism, but it doesn't seem to be that way.
Well like I said, there are definitely those types of feminists out there, but that isn't everyone on that side. When toxic masculinity is referred to, it doesn't mean that being masculine is toxic, it refers to the aspect of masculinity that prevents men from being whole emotional creatures. I first signed onto feminism (while still identifying as a man) precisely because they provided a space to acknowledge my emotional oppression. I'm sorry you've only seen the Germaine Greer type of mysandry disguised as feminism, but that's not what it's about at all. I'm not sure what capitalism has to do with it though?
No, I'm saying that's not what I've experienced. I'm not trying to defend anyone or take sides, just understand why two sides fighting for what I see as the same end can't fight together.
What I'm hearing from you is that your experience of feminism is very different to mine. I'm hearing your experience is one of exclusion and mockery. I'm sorry that's the case, it's not right you should be subjected to that.
I'd like to follow a tangent for a minute though, if you'll indulge me. When I confronted my religious upbringing, I found myself an atheist. Like many atheists, I find the bullshit of fundamentalist Christians obscene, and really hardly different from that of Muslim extremists. I saw this bullshit everywhere and still fight against it. Like a lot of atheists though, I found it difficult to draw the line between extremists and people just living their lives. There's a lot of gradient in there. A little while ago I found myself in hospital for a week or so after an emergency situation. I began to realise that all sorts of people with all sorts of different philosophies were able to come together with no purpose other than to help those that needed it. After that I found I couldn't help but look for the good in people when I found myself disagreeing with them about something. I began to see a whole lot more of the Christians that were calling for moderation and tolerance, rather than the loud fundamentalists. I realised that I had been looking for the fundamentalists because I wanted to shut them up. I'm not saying that's what you're doing, I don't know you or your experience, but I do wonder how much that phenomenon plays a part, on both sides.
I never said anything about 'true feminism', just my experience of it. Maybe all my research only led me to inclusive spaces because that's what I was looking for in feminism. I can say that my experience doesn't align with what you've described. When I had to fight tooth and nail just to get access to my daughter as a father, I received support from feminists (while identifying male). When I cried about being abused and raped by my ex wife, I received support from feminists (again, still identifying male). I can't talk academics with you on this, just experience. I do acknowledge the faults in the system you describe though, and will happily lament them with you.
Hmm, I'd agree with the idea that it assumes we start from a position of male weighted gender imbalance, and I'm inclined to agree with it in that respect (having been perceived as lived on both sides of the fence, my experience guides me there). I don't agree it means the rest of what you say, but can appreciate that your rejection of that initial premise would lead to those conclusions. Well, I'm going to continue to call myself a feminist and work against the patriarchy, but I hope you understand that my goals aren't what you've stated. They are genuine equality, including the right for men to be fragile, whole, humans, the same as women.
No, I'm not, I'm looking at it as whether it is inclusive of all people or not. That includes men, and as I have stated in other comments my experience of feminism is one that does welcome and include men. I see patriarchal society as the reason men are forbidden from expressing any form of weakness, as the reason you aren't allowed to show emotions in public, the reason you aren't taken seriously as victims of abuse, the reason you are subject to conscription. All that is bullshit and should be fought, and it is my understanding that is you guys here are fighting?
Well my experience of trying to fit in in a male world is what leads me to say it's patriarchal. It was my dad and grandad that beat me for acting like a fag. It was the boys on the footy team that called anyone weak a poofter or a woman. It was my male teachers that told me to suck it up and act like a man. None of the women in life did that, so I'm inclined to disagree with you on that point. Was your experience that different?
Yeah, a lot of people seem to like to go pick fights in other people's spaces. I see enough of that shit over in trans and lgbt spaces, I have no desire to perpetuate it. At the end of the day we're all human and just trying to get by as best we can.
I think it's a very mixed bag. I've always wanted to be a mother (which somehow never tipped anyone off that I might have been trans!), but my experience is that wanting children is independent of ability. I do think however that there are as many women as men who don't want children (again irrespective of ability). I think most men and most women want children at some point in their lives.
Well, those two words actually mean the same thing, transsexual is somewhat outdated, though some trans people still prefer it. I'm not one of them. Oh, and one is transgender, or a transgender person, but not a transgender - that's a little like saying someone is a blue-eyed.
As to the rest of what you say, my edit still applies, but thanks for your input.
I came here peacefully and politely, to try and engage in respectful conversation about a topic we disagree on. Until now I've only been able to say that despite our difference of opinion people here are respectful, intelligent and kind. You are being incredibly rude right now, and there's no need for it. I responded to your comment to try and show that I'm open and willing to discuss myself. I'm not sure where you've got your facts on me and my identity, but they're completely wrong.
Okay, so it really comes down to patriarchy as a concept? I can respect that.
Can I politely ask why you reject that concept? I see a society where leaders are overwhelmingly male, it is the males name given to women and children. The father is the leader of the household. That all seems patriarchal to me, but maybe we're talking different aspects of something else?
