So I was talking to a friend of a friend and wandered into Doctor Who territory, I happened to mention that I felt the Doctor shouldn't be played by a woman as he was a male character.

In summary I explained how since the Doctor had a mother, Galifreyans must have set genders and so although the Doctor makes himself look human he always regenerates as male because that's the gender was before. I reinstated this point by saying that if by chance the Doctor did regenerate in a female body he would still have the same past experiences and mind and so then you'd have a transgendered doctor without overlooking serious areas.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for creating strong female characters but I'm completely against turning already existing strong male characters into women for the sake of clicks, if anything it'd be more patronising for women too, there is plenty that can be done to create a fascinating female character without copying men.

So at this point the guy jumps up telling me that his girlfriend is hugely opinionated on this topic and he wants to get her on the phone for a debate. Now I'm always up for a reasonable argument and accept being proved wrong so I agreed and he calls her up.

The first words she said to me were "Right, okay, well first off, YOU'RE WRONG". Reasonable right? It gets better, this girl I don't even know starts yelling down the phone calling me sexist, misogynistic and even blaming "people like me" for Trump at one point. I hadn't even opened my mouth.

I tried to settle her down and defend myself with what I felt was a rationed argument from my side but every corner she'd shut me down, responding to what she thought my argument was rather than what it really was.

Okay so the transgender Doctor was a little hyperbolic and sort of reducto ad absurdum but I threw it in anyway to try and back up my point.

This is when shit really hit the fan, "TRANSPHOBIC! SEXIST!" all I was trying to do was say that if the doctor kept his mental state but changed his physical to a woman that would in essence be the same as a transgendered guy, the doctor may talk and act slightly differently throughout regenerations but he's the same mind underneath.

She hung up shortly after that, undefeated in her eyes. I bet you anything right now there's an alternate version of this story on tumblr talking about the sexist pig who denied a man's right to be a man.
