Non MR rant.

I had to look up Wikipedia to confirm that Teresa May is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She and her husband live in a government-provided residence in the midst of a complex of prestigious government buildings with their own professional janitorial, maintenance, and security staff. Believing for a moment that the First Gentleman really does haul the trash out every Tuesday morning, probably to the eyerolling of the cleaners and bodyguards, it's playacting and a false economy.

Even as a gesture to make themselves relatable to the voters, it's an anachronism. It's not the 1950's any more, when washing machines made domestic staff less necessary, a booming economy made it harder to retain servants, and an egalitarian atmosphere made shows of wealth tasteless and middle class people vaguely embarrassed about having servants.

The winners in today's global economy, and the only voters whose opinions the Conservative or Labour party really give a shit about, have two incomes, a Latvian nanny, and a Filipina housekeeper. No awkward conversations with working class people of their own nationality, and no embarrassment about having servants, instead a feeling of virtue for employing grateful, uncomplaining, immigrants In Search of a Better Life.
