It should be. It should also be legal for the husband to divorce his pregnant wife (regardless of who is the sire) if she doesn't abort. And it should be legal for any father to sign a document to prevent any parental responsibility, prior to the birth.

I agree except for the sign to prevent any parental responsibility before birth, I think it should be sign to accept before birth, otherwise the woman could just aviod the guy until after the birth to trap him into supporting her decision.

Sign away his rights before birth or 2 months after he found out about him being a father, whichever comes later.

Proving a negative is usually impossible. How would he prove he didn't know before a certain time? Opting in is a better solution.

under current law in the US we don't need the fathers consent to get an abortion and we don't even have to tell the father if we don't want to. We don't need a 'reason' either; our reason could be as simple as "i'm just not ready to have a child" or "it's an inconvenient time..." - I'm not a big fan of abortion however the baby could not survive without the host body for most of the first two trimesters so I'm not thrilled about the idea of banning them either.

However in the interest of 'fairness' - a woman can choose to have an abortion simply because she doesn't want to be on the hook to take care of a child for the next ~19 years... if that is an acceptable reason for the mother to abort then it should also be an acceptable reason for the father to opt out of the same ~19 years of parental responsibilities.

Is this a rhetorical question?

As far as I'm aware, in my country the answer is 'Yes'.

Well if she is seeking money from him then the burden of proof is in her. An email. A shared visit to the doctor. Etc.

[–]Stripes1974 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Actually that's not entirely true.

It is, in fact, very possible for a man to have never been in a position-- figuratively and literally-- to have impregnated a woman, and in certain states, if she names him as the father and he does not come to Court to refute that claim within a certain time, he can be found by the Court and by that state to be the father and therefore financially responsible for that child.

Talk about getting fucked without getting fucked.....

((This is presuming we're talking about "the burden of proof is in her" about whether or not he is or can be determined to be the father. If that isn't the case, then we can disregard my comment.))

[–]hackableyou 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That is crazy. I would imagine a simple paternity test would show he isn't responsible.

[–]Stripes1974 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Doesn't matter.

It's about "what is best for the child", not "is he actually the father?"
Here's an article where the male "parent" is presumed because he and mom were previously married, but he is not the father by DNA:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/okla-man-forced-pay-child-support-boy-isn-son-article-1.2946399

....and an article wherein the guy in question wasn't even with the mother of the child, and yet he's on the hook for child support:
http://www.theroot.com/judge-orders-detroit-man-to-pay-30-000-in-back-child-s-1790858861

So...this does happen.
And yes, the United States is a crazy country. Look who some of these crazy fuckers elected to be their leader....

Wow that is crazy. It just doesn't seem fair.

Yes.

In my country, women have total freedom of reproduction. Men have none. A women can abort, deliver and adopt out the child, or force the father, or her husband even if he is not the father, to finance the child to adulthood. A man doesn't even have the right to know whether his child is to be aborted and certainly has no rights to know about his minor child's abortions.
