It's a documentary about the restrictive norms of masculinity in american society and how they negatively impact boys expecially those of working class and blue collar background who can't express their emotional side and end up having behavioral issues and crime records.
I can't say I totally disagree with the premise but as usual this kind of social commentary totally overlooks the role of women in shaping traditional or mainstream masculinity. in fact teenage boys want to impress girls to win their affection and their sexual intimacy and they need to fit certain requirements that girls look for. the competition to become sexually desirable leads many boys to an excess of machism or toxic masculinity as the documentary often defines it.
it's like in old movies where you have two teenage kids competing with each other to win a girl's heart and they end up with the chicken game racing their cars towards a cliff: toxic behavior to settle a dispute over a female.
of course you cant expect modern films to deal with this because women are a protected class above any criticism and it's not even an easy problem to solve since female sexual preferences are the result of evolution and they can't be changed overnight.
