If you're already an adult, you can still protect yourself by getting a prescription and buying it yourself

You're more likely to catch it if you're a "boy in the hood" (uncircumcised), and condoms help but don't prevent 100%

In Canada, Gardasil 9 is about $200, and you need 3 of them over a year. Cervarix is a bit cheaper but Gardasil protects against more strains. There are over 100 strains, and only some cause cancer

There is no test for HPV (at least for men), and ~85% of women will have it at some point in their lives

A 75% infection rate sounds bad and protects against 9 HPV types that sounds good.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Over 40 distinct types can infect the genital tract; about 90% of infections are asymptomatic and resolve spontaneously within two years. However, persistent infection with some HPV types can cause cancer and genital warts.

So the vaccine will only protect against 9/40=22.5% of infections or is 77.5% ineffective. If no treatment is give there is a 90% cure rate. Only about half those people who do not resolve spontaneously will get cancer.

100 sexually active people -> 75 infections over a life time -> 7.5 persistent infections -> 3.75 cases of a treatable form of cancer

100 sexually active people -> 75 infections over a life time -> 58 infections due to vaccine -> 5.8 persistent infections -> 2.9 cases of a treatable form of cancer

The above numbers are assuming a lifetime vaccine protection which is not the case. There is no point in giving it to someone that is too young as the vaccine can wear off before they even become sexually active.

Gardasil and Cervarix have only been shown to last for 5 and 9.4 years respectively.

There are pap smears that are considered to have near 100% detection rate which means treatment can be given and the 90% cure rate can go up dramatically. Possibly a throat swab could be developed for males. At best this program is a waste of money and at worst it is harmful due to potential side effects.

I was expecting something negative in this, that's a good thing though. An instance where boys and girls health are both being considered and cared for on equal ground.
