You can tell by the facial expressions and body language of the kids and mother that the father's not some abusive monster. Definitely he slipped into pathological territory and became firmly entrenched there by not knowing how to return things to normal, feeling more stuck as time went on, but surely that is a psychological/mental health issue. Sadly, it seems that it could have been dealt with long ago with some intervention.
