They fined her £1 because she had no money to pay back otherwise. She also got 3 years in prison.

Would've been better to fine her at least 50,000 and make her pay it off through labor while she is serving her sentence.

So what?

Now we fine people based on whether they have the money to pay?!

She will earn more money in her lifetime. Keep her paying.

Now we fine people based on whether they have the money to pay?!

Yes. This is quite common and has been going on for a long time. There is a lower limit on how much money people can have/earn and how much you can fine them without causing undue stress.

Why do you think that she should should have to pay though? Isn't prison punishment enough?

Isn't prison punishment enough?

No.

[–]modernbenoni 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But what if she had a longer sentence? What are you trying to achieve with that punishment?

[–]tio1w 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The punishment is an end in itself.

[–]modernbenoni 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. There are several good reasons for punishment, and punishment for punishment's sake is not one of them.

I feel that 3 years in prison is a good enough punishment. People do not realize what 3 years in prison is and I'm sure she'd rather pay back all those who she scammed and more if that meant not having to go to prison.
I don't think this is a pussy pass.

[–]RichGunzUSA 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

It doesnt say how many she scammed. What if she scammed 5 people for 10k each, would you really be ok with someone only getting 3 years after taking so much money from you? I wouldnt be.

[–]brokencig 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

What ifs don't count in court. This is why I believe her punishment fit the crime.

[–]RichGunzUSA -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

No they dont but context does. If she had thousands of victims at a few hundred than 3 years fits it. But like I said what if its like 5 victims losing 10K each. That could be money someone was saving for a surgery. What happens if they die because they couldnt afford treatment? She should than be charged with manslaughter in that case. I however am not familiar with the case or number of victims. Hopefully someone can link an article with more details.

You have absolutely no clue how law works then. She wasn't charged with anything else therefore she can't be held accountable for that. If some other victims come forward then yes it's possible she will have to answer for more crimes but she wasn't charged or even suspected of anything else.

What if you jaywalking , which causes a car to slow down, slowing down the flow of traffic behind it and causing a small fender bender half a mile back also causes an ambulance to have to slow down for 30 seconds and the person inside that ambulance dies!!!

This is why the law doesn't work like that.

[–]RichGunzUSA 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Well than who would be responsible in such a situation. just curious in case I need to plan future lawsuits.

[–]GingerSnapBiscuit 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Nobody. Sometimes shit just happens. It doesn't always have to be someones "fault".

You are still guilty of jaywalking. You didn't kill the dude in the ambulance.

It doesn't always have to be someones "fault".

Than how is a victim supposed to seek compensation? I mean sure their loved one is still dead but money seems to make passing a lot easier to bear.

[–]GingerSnapBiscuit 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

They aren't. Why is their loved one due compensation if nobody is at fault for their loved one passing. Maybe carry life insurance if you want a cash payout when you die.

[–]RichGunzUSA 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Why is their loved one due compensation if nobody is at fault for their loved one passing.

Look you might disagree but Im simply asking a question should something like this happen in real life. If someone were to deprive me of a loved one, especially the breadwinner, I damn well expect compensation to continue my standard of living. Someones always responsible. if not the jaywalker than is it the ambulance? One of the cars? The paramedics for not doing a better job?

Edit: And for the record of course I have life insurance, Its the only insurance I believe in. It doesnt hurt however to also pad it with a lawsuit.

You mean 9 months. She'll get released.
