People are constantly telling me "boys are easier" to raise (casual and ingrained sexism, anyone?), but I think they are much harder.

How is saying boys are easier sexism but saying they are harder not sexism?

Stop your patriarchal logic this instant, you're raping her brain.

[–]fengpi 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Question: when she said she felt sick at having something male inside her... when she became pregnant, wouldn't that also require her to have something male inside her?

I mean, I know that turkey basters are cheap and plentiful, but I'm pretty old fashioned.

when I felt sick at the thought of something male growing inside me

Jesus Christ.

I read articles like this, and I always read over them again, only flipping the mentioned genders.

Disgusting.

I felt sick at the thought of something male growing inside me.

Where oh where do people get the nutty, obviously-false notion that feminists have some kind of problem with men?

"I will show him that girls are just people like him and that products and art targeted at them are no less valuable or enjoyable. He will be immersed in feminism by a family who models it in their everyday life."

This article has disturbed me, not at the "feminists are idiots" level but at the "this child's life will be ruined by a hate-filled bigot" level. She is planning to inculcate a child with shame and brainwash him with nonsense in order to make herself feel better.

I feel so sorry for the poor mite. He will almost certainly hate her, of course, but what pain lies ahead for him? The woman's Mother (Jane Caro) is a hate filled gender bigot, and she has raised another HFGB. But the male child doesn't deserve this.

I suspect he would be better off given up for adoption.

I've always been a feminist... when the sonographer pointed out my son's dangly bits in our 19-week scan, it was clear that I was going to raise a son... There were dark moments in the middle of the night (when all those dark thoughts come), when I felt sick at the thought of something male growing inside me.

Feminism: It's for Men Too.

https://pjmedia.com/drhelen/2014/12/03/will-my-geek-son-be-a-sexist-jerk/

As commenters to the article are already pointing out, Terra Clarke Olsen, the author of this piece, is already pre-judging her unborn child and has him pegged as a potential perp before he is even born -- and she thinks it is girls who suffer from sexism.

Maybe this horrible woman has to make a living or something and writes terrible things about a little baby that can't fight back and probably won't fight back against women like this due to cultural conditioning. She ends the piece with a quote from another parent saying about his five- year-old son: “I see this age as the perfect opportunity to (for better or worse) influence his worldview. That’s my job. If he grows up to be an asshole, that’s on me. I’ve failed him.” Wow, if he has a daughter, does he say, "Hope she doesn't grow up to be a slut!"? I really doubt it. Is this the way to treat any five year old--to think of him as a potential asshole just for being male?

I hope I am wrong and this author's poor kid will see mom for the terrible man-hating person that she is, but that is unlikely to happen. Kids naturally love mom, no matter what; it must be biological.

"Feminists have long expected a backlash from some mysterious cabal. They have breathlessly spoken of it as a wonderful opportunity to finally finish off the hated patriarchy. Imagine their horror as they realize that this backlash they have been preparing for all these years is coming from their sons. "

This is why I feel so bad for men raised by single mothers, and feminists. Its like they view them as a puppy they didn't really want to adopt.

[–]Contageon 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I was raised by a single mother who was a self proclaimed feminist who hated my father with the utmost intensity.

I would have given anything for that level of benign neglect you described.

In truth you wind up being a lightning rod for every passing comment about how evil, sadistic, lecherous, incompetent, dishonest, disloyal, weak, pathetic, lazy, . . all men are. I could go on with that list, but I'd rather not.

It will sometimes be about your father, sometimes about her most recent ex, the rest of the time just about men in general when anything like a movie, cartoon, news segment, magazine article touches on something bad a man did.

When you make mistakes or act out as kids/teens tend to you will get 'you are just like your father' which you will, as a kid internalizing everything, connect that dot to the comments she made about him I mentioned previously. Likewise when someone innocently says the old cliche at your 18th birthday 'you're a man now' and be confused by the look of sheer dread you display as the color drains from your face at being called such a hateful thing.

Since you have been raised by this same woman - to believe your suffering is the least important thing in the world, you wont voice any of this. . . except maybe anonymously on an internet forum decades later.

I hope this kid fares better with the above than I did...

Holy shit. You make me want to cry. That makes me so angry. I'm so sorry my brother...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

My girlfriend was raised by a single mom too. It has taken her quite a while to forgive her mom for some of the stuff she did to her.

Single mothers are just more of an example of why 2 parent households are almost needed to raise a kid properly.

I am really sorry you had to go through all that..

[–]Contageon 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks for the kind words you two, I really do appreciate it - but I wasn't looking to start a pity party for myself over this. There are kids out there who have had it far worse than myself. I've lived in Jakarta and Africa since and seen what they go through. And even then those aren't the worst places to be a young boy.

It was more to try to . . and i guess i should have started with this. It was more outlining that in the hope that someone who knows this woman - or others with her point of view who are the primary carers of a boy(s). Will have a better understanding of what that narrative does when its constant and from such a powerful influence in your life early on.

I suspect that her sentiments about her feminist father and grandfather that she mentioned in her article aren't what she presented them as. Like when you hear someone say how great their marriage is and then you meet their downtrodden and depressed partner. If she really did love these male feminists then she wouldn't automatically be revolted at the thought of having a boy. Hating something that hasn't even been born yet purely on its gender tells me she doesn't like any living thing with external plumbing.

So I suspect these men in her family frequent websites and reddits like this one in secret to maintain their sanity and stave off the thoughts of self harm. If so I would like to warn them of a few things:

Do not confront her over the behavior - if you call her out she will cut you out of her life, and by extension the boys life. If this happens with enough people, the boy will have no one. If the mother feels cornered she will move away and the boy will lose his school friends too.

Don't bother with the whole 'you can tell me' to this kid - he won't be able to. There will be an almost physical block to him being able to speak about anything personal by the time he is old enough to actually articulate things like that. Just boost his confidence in any way you can and show him examples of men to look up to.

Lastly, and this one is vital - Keep a very close eye on her long term boyfriends (or girlfriends) - There is a kind of person who stays in a relationship with someone like this after discovering how they treat their own son. Decent people won't be able to stand being in a relationship but will remain friends to try and help the boy. The ones who stay in the relationship after witnessing it, even marry her later - I'm not a fan of going into detail on this, even anonymously, but you get where I am going with this.

Just keep an eye on it. Watch the boys behavior when this person enters the room. Obviously the behavior will present itself differently in each kid and it wont always equal abuse behind the scenes, but as an example - If he becomes really detached from everything, becomes obsessed with distractions, becomes obsessed with self defense - not talking about just watching movies and attending the odd class. I mean training 6 hours a day outside of lessons and ALWAYS coming back in from training covered in bruises or cuts - its a form of self harm, not dedication. The point is look for a major shift from how the kid normally is to something more anti-social when this person is around.

Anything like that - well I don't exactly know of any legal solutions for it, taking a kid away from his mother is a hell of a task legally speaking even if the kid wants to go. Trying will just make it worse for the kid, so I guess the best thing you can do is just get him out of the house regularly. Offer to take the kid places to give her a break, phrased like that she will likely jump at it. If there's more than one kid take them out one at a time, whatever is manageable for you, so it doesn't look suspicious to the mother. And just go fishing or something that doesn't involve talking, let the kid just chill without trying to get an answer that he has been trained not to give.

Let him process everything in peace for a few years and perhaps one day he'll talk.

[–]Contageon 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And that's a good point PowerToAnnihilate - even the daughters of women like this will suffer. Differently in some ways, but I am sure a lot of the symptoms would overlap. So yeah taking them out as well to let them just chill and showing them examples of good men will definitely be of benefit to them.

Wow. The article is even worse than I expected

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, I have to say, I agree with her.

I'm disappointed she's having a boy too

Oh man, is she going to be in for a rude surprise.

I forsee an endless parade of her gendered presuppositions being shattered one after the other as her kid grows up.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Either her kid is going to hate himself, or hate her.

I see no in between with this story.

[–]SRSLovesGawker 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Either her kid is going to hate himself, or hate her.

¿Por que no los dos?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Because either he will buy into the feminist brainwashing that men are horrible monsters, and hate himself..

Or he won't buy into it, and hate her for thinking he is a monster.

[–]SRSLovesGawker 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or the brainwashing will be partially successful, as most are, resulting in epic amounts of both self-loathing and resentment against his mother.

My money's on los dos.

I'm honestly surprised she didn't abort him.
