My way of looking at this case, is to ask: if the gender's were reversed, would the ruling be the same? I'll let everyone else answer that question. I think the answer is obvious.

Yeah, the judge's decision was nutty, but the fact remains that a man with a million pound a year business at the time trusted a "verbal agreement" with his wife in a divorce case to stand in court if and when that wife decided to challenge it.

Surely, with those kinds of resources, he could have had access to a lawyer to draft a written agreement that would be a lot more binding in these situations than a simple handshake, no?

Of course, my stock response still applies: don't get married, don't cohabit. You subsidize someone else's life, and it will never, ever, EVER end.
