Women are actually more likely to suffer from depression, but more likely to seek help when they encounter trouble. The uncomfortable truth is that stereotypical forms of masculinity – stiff upper lips, "laddishness" – are killing men.

"Asking for help is seen as an affront to masculinity," says the writer Laurie Penny, who has extensively researched mental health issues and written about her own experiences. "This is deeply, deeply troubling, because it means when you're taking that first step when you're suffering a mental health difficulty, reaching out for help is made doubly hard. The rules of masculinity prevent you from asking for help or talking about feelings."

real issues that men face. not the other crap of not being allowed to be with underage girls freely. I know a few men who suffer from depression, one who gets therapy. I believe women seeking help because they are allowed. Men aren't allowed to seek help. I know men who self have self medicated their depression and I know more boys/men who have killed themselves. it's heartbreaking that we make men feel like that suicide is the only answer. :(

"I don't keep quiet about my problems because of some stupid ideas about having to be strong and silent, I keep quiet about my problems because nobody will help me. But let's have another article how men's suffering is men's fault because they won't speeak up about it, please!"

I did open up about my mental health. So brave, right? speaking up, defying so much toxic masculinity you guys, I talked about my problems with many people, I talked until I was blue in the face! My family sees me as barely human. No friends call anymore. Girlfriend turned into somebody else overnight, then faded away.

What part of the "rules of femininity" prevent them from seeking help to avoid them attempting suicide more often than men? Oh, that'll be patriarchy.

"Is it biologically set in stone that men take their own lives – or is it cultural?" Powell asks. "If you look at how the suicide rates have changed, how they go up and down, you can see that it's cultural – it's about what we expect."

Also the fact that there are differences in this ratio between countries.
