Marriage and divorce law in Morocco. A surprisingly balanced piece of coverage given the source, and halfway through there's even a segment that mentions female violence against men.

I keep being told age-ism is a huge problem. Seeing as I work in Silicon Valley, it is supposed to be a pervasive, overwhelming issue for anyone over 35.

I'm pushing 50 and I'm not seeing it.

I see a few people who don't perform at the level they used to who think they should be able to just sit in thier job and coast until retirement.

No, I'm not going to carry you and your salary on my budget if you're not performing up to snuff. That goes for you being 25 or 55.

But the older people who're still performing don't seem to be having a problem.

I have a guy who is 58 who volunteered to move to be the sole sysadmin in a remote office. He's pretty valuable for us. We know we can trust him to manage himself without any direct supervision and communicate up everything that I or my managers need to know.

Every time we've had a similar situation with someone under 30, it has turned into a complete cluster fuck.

Yeah. I think it's a little sneakier than that - it's about the average age being younger and then the hiring person thinks that it isn't a good "fit", regardless of experience or performance.

EDIT; I personally have seen the best candidate (my opinion) not receive an offer because he was an older guy. I did the interviewing.

To be fair, age is an issue on a collective level.

Boomers having been born in the same two decades (well, duh), they will retire and die in about the same two decades.

Due to the economic expansion of the '70s, boomers are the majority population in quite a lot of European firms, especially in middle management.

Replacing a massively retiring workforce won't be easy.

On the other hand, it in no way justifies discriminating against older employees.

If they were born in the same two decades, they will retire over about 20 years. They will then be replaced by GenXers and Millennials.

It isn't like they're going to all come in and retire all at once.

Seeing as the kids born at the beginning of the baby boom are now 70 yo, this process is already underway.

My point was poorly made.

Boomers here were not evenly spread out over two decades. The hiring peak of the late '60s / early '70s was violent, but even narrower.

GenX doesn't have the sheer numbers to fill in for boomers. With a failing employment market, it might not be such an accute issue.

The issue with GenY is the lack of experience. As you pointed out, replacing the bloke who's been on the job 35+ years with a guy who's not even 35 himself, well, doesn't always pan out.

.

Whatever the reason, you're right, the process is already underway. Retirement parties at my clients' are going at an insane rate, and half the guys there are talking about their own upcoming retirement, and upper management is getting chills. When not planning their own retirement, obviously.

I think there's no ground to push boomers aside, but there is a real need to forcefully move some GenX / GenY up.

Tutoring and overlap periods cost money, but ultimately less than losing the accumulated experience.

"Really? No one is telling men to go (they make up 45 per cent of the bureaucracy), or white people to go, or Ontarians, or any other potentially over-represented public service group."

Men are over represented at 45%. There must be a man shortage in Canada.
