I had sex with a woman last night who was heavily intoxicated after telling her 3 times through tears that I didn't want to have sex with her.

I dispute most of that, including individual female dancers' anecdotes.

Why do orchestras have gender quotas even when auditions are behind screens?

Boys who show interest in dance are derided as sissies or gays. So why shouldn't dance programmes privilege boys, on the same grounds as STEM is told to privilege girls/females?

And of course it could be argued that the prima is the star in any ballet, with the male only a foil to lift, kneel to, and generally adore the female.

And we all know that (1) every human endeavour in existence has been said sexist unless it grants absolute supremacy to the female /sarcasm and (2) the New York Times is hardly an honest or objective observer of gender issues.

I mean of course anecdotes are bad evidence, no point in refuting or supporting them. It was just relevant.

I don't understand what orchestras have to do with this. They're related careers, but completely seperate.

I'm not asserting that it's wrong or right for men in the dance industry to receive special treatment from directors, choreographers, producers, etc. Simply that they do. Of course men in modern dance and ballet alike will receive social backlash for their decisions. Perhaps it makes it fair that they also receive an easier path through the career than women.

If you honestly care to know my opinion on the morality of this I think it's unfair to benefit anyone based on their gender, and it provides an avenue for the few men who truly may be passionate about this field to be invalidated.

The orchestra problem shows that the NYT article is cherry-picking (if not completely invalid). I can cherry-pick to show any human activity biased against blue-eyed people (or, more appropriately, against males).

Again, I contest absolutely the idea that males in ballet receive any gender favoritism; that's complete b.s. As in other endeavours, men are usually willing to risk more financially, intellectually, and artistically, and are more likely to give up personal life for professional.

Finally, I certainly don't accept as proof either one dancer's (your friend's) anecdotes and damseling, or anything printed by the viciously-bigoted New York Times.

I happened to recently see a major company perform a classic, century-old ballet. Were I to count, the number of males in the company were far less than the numbers of females, and the spot light was upon the prima twice as much as upon the male. So that proves ballet sexist against men. How's that for cherry-picking?

I've only been to a couple of ballets and operas, but would definitely like to see more. The best was Swan Lake by Matthew Bourne, which was really amazing.

I also once saw Riverdance, which is brilliant, and is Irish dance. That was written and scored by men to.

It's funny how dance is 90% women, but it's the very few men in it who seem to be the most innovative and creative.

Anecdotal point:

I have a close friend who has been a dancer all her life. She recently began lamenting to me the different advantages she sees given to male dancers. They included massive favoritism in solo selection, entire groups at competitions that were designated male only (thus guaranteeing most boys participation in two groups to my understanding), and general statistical advantages in BFA selection (the degree for performing dance arts).
