I saw the first two seasons and liked it, as a former prisoner. I liked it enough that I read the book.

If they jumped the shark as much as this article says they did, then boo on them.

The book is very good, though, and I recommend it.

My thoughts were confirmed. I saw this show on my queue of suggestions but I never watched it because I just guessed it would be a feminist dream.

Yeah, I also only watched the first two seasons, and already felt a steep decline in the second.

But I will forever be grateful to it, because it introduced the phrase "cunt ramming awesome" into my vocabulary.

So it's a show about women who were either blackmailed into crime or acted in self defense and went to prison?

So it's complete fantasy then, as in real life if there's even a whiff of extenuating circumstances they get off Scott free.

Every male in the show is either totally pathetic or just dogshit horrible. The only guy with redeeming qualities is the guard who sacrificed himself for his girlfriend and new baby. (because that's what men are good for, eh?) And then he bails, because oh yeah, all men are dogshit.

All of this contrasts starkly with how the women are portrayed. Even the most hardened criminals are depicted in a better light than any of the men. The prisoners (women) are humans, sometimes flawed, frequently victims, who deserve our compassion.

To be clear, I have no problem with that as a premise for a show. It's the contrast between the way women and men are presented that gets under my skin. The women deserve our compassion, while the men are all rapists, abusers, racists, sexists, and everything else.
