I think this addresses the frustrations with SA, without actually getting into the discussion of how to change anything.

Sexual Assault is a horrible crime, everyone agrees with that. What people don't agree with is what constitutes sexual assault, and how quickly it can get murky.

We hear all the time that sexual assault is bad, and we should do everything to stop it. Okay i'm with you so far. But then they turn it on its head and say affirmative action should be the go to policy for engaging in sexual activity with a person. Make sure the other person wants to be there and is okay with what is going on? Right on, who could disagree with that. If she is under the influence of alcohol in any way, consent can no longer be given.

Woah. Woah woah woah. What?

I don't know about you guys, and girls for that matter, but alcohol is a legal substance that we are all responsible for, right? If we get behind the wheel, we are responsible. If we drunkenly call an ex, we are responsible. If we get into a fight, we are responsible. But if we want to have sex we no longer are responsible? Just doesn't make sense does it.

Now I am with Laci on this one to a certain extent. I think the amount of malicious lies to get people in trouble over fake accusations is incredibly low. What isn't incredibly low, is the number of people who can claim sexual assault under arguable circumstances. I am sure we have all been with a one night stand, SO, or even spouse and had sex with them. How is it half the population, especially in college it would be higher, are not currently on trial, in jail, or on some kind of sexual assault list?

I have been told point blank during sexual assault prevention meetings and online policy slideshows that drunk sex cannot be consensual. So my question becomes, Laci, isn't your current platform of sexual assault prevention doing more harm than good? The reason people keep finding 50% of these allegations false is because of the undeniably grey area you have created.

When you create circumstances that are so far based on "he said she said", of course there will never be any convictions. Of course victims of actual sexual assault won't come forward. You have made the criteria so low and so vague that it is literally one persons word against the other. It isn't even based on actions anymore. It's the idea of verbal consent.

But. And it is a big but; sexual assault does in fact happen in the way you are describing. Girls do get drunk and are unable to fight something off, or are too subdued to even really know what is going on.

So, my ultimate question becomes: Are you going to sit back and take a backseat while people are getting assaulted, raped, and abused, all because you are not willing to give up your victim status position? Affirmative consent laws do not work. When all it takes is a word to change it from intimate and loving sex, to assault or rape, isn't that just a little too conspicuous of a gauge?

I think it is time we step up and actually help potential victims, and use sexual assault prevention material proactively, and give people the tools they need to maintain a safe environment.

1.) Teach all people to respect their own boundaries. Self police your own alcohol intake, whether you are around people you 100% trust, or are at a college party/bar. Best case when you black out, people take a sharpie to your face, worst case you end up assaulted and don't remember. Also respect your own boundaries in what you are and are not willing to do with another person. Be vocal about those boundaries. If all you want to do is make-out with the person, you need to be vocal about it. If you are willing to have sex as long as there is a condom, you need to be vocal and clear about that. If you just want to hook up, that's cool too. But be vocal about what you want.

2.) Establish a safe word or some kind of line. As we all know, the feminist fantasy of asking permission for every inch you move is not very sexy, and it is honestly a farce. By having an actual safe word, you can say it hurts, or that you aren't into that exact thing, without misleading the other person into thinking it is wrong. Most importantly, it gives the other person a clear and vocal sign that "the game is over" and you have revoked your consent.

3.) Look out for each other. Sometimes we have one too many, and our "drunk self" takes over. Sometimes that version of you really wants to have sex, or do something that you wouldn't normally do. You wouldn't let someone drive home drunk, and you wouldn't let them get dragged off by anyone. Let it be clear though, you are your own person. If you are giving enthusiastic consent even under the influence, it is on you, not your friends to be responsible for your actions.

Which brings us back to #1. You are your #1 advocate. How can it be a crime when you are demanding sex while drunk, yet in the morning when you sober up, you regret it. It doesn't work that way with driving, texting, or anything else. Isn't it time we stop fighting with an agenda, and actually help victims of sexual assault through establishing a moderate set of trust and confidence in our own decisions?

The link Laci claims states 2-8% of rape allegations are false doesn't even contain any statistics, it is a document titled "Reporting Rape in 2013 Summary Reporting System (SRS) User Manual and Technical Specification", which describes the procedure and definitions used by the FBI in reporting of rapes and accusations. Nowhere in the document is any percentages or historical statistics mentioned, which means by extension Laci is either lying or at least made a mistake.

Why is this tagged as a false accusation if there hasn't been a verdict yet? Rapists DO exist, ya know.
