The article could be useful for everyone proposing draconian solutions without considering the side effects, like undermining Due Process.

For effectiveness, they have to use girls as the ones hurt by draconian, Kafkaesque laws.

I'm sure they know that if they used boys, readers would neither empathize with them nor give them the benefit of the doubt.

Last fall, she contacted a national group called Women Against Registry, joining the ranks of mothers who are calling into question what a previous group of parents, those of victimized children, fought hard to achieve.

Again, would people believe a group called Men Against Registry, even if they supported equality?

It's a life sentence for anyone that's put on it. Even here in NY where the lowest level offenders leave the list after 20 years, the irreparable damage to your life has already been done. You're never going to be able to reach the same heights, if you even get a chance at all. For all intents and purposes, your life fucking ends the day you go on the list. You'll still be alive, but you won't be living, ever.

Right. As I said below (since angry cunts with their panties in a twist like downvoting), the laws are there to punish people who kidnap, rape, and murder children, and punish them over and beyond law that already exist on the books for rape, murder, and kidnapping.

These same laws also tremendously harm, if not outright kill through suicide, alley pissers or consensual sex between two people where one or both of them can't 'legally' consent.

All this digital tracking, permanent records, etc will create a new type of slavery. One minor indiscretion can undo years, decades, or even a lifetime of diligence and care. Your life can be over before it's even begun. And unlike in times past, moving away or changing your name to start over will become increasingly difficult.

I have chosen to not reproduce, to not bring a child into this world that has gone so far off the deep end of insanity. Non-existence seems to be the only real protection from a system that is basically designed to make you fail.

its growing pains. The world is going to have to mature en masse, that everyone commits some bad things in life, whether legal or not, and that we all have to live with ourselves, and so with each other, if we desire not to be hypocrites.

The worst are the guys being added for indecent exposure for pissing in an alley.

But isn't sexual misconduct a horrific atrocity? An 18 year old as a legal adult will have to deal with it with everyone saying tough luck.

Its working as intended.

One of the guys in the story is 17 and had sex with a 13 year old. Its a horrible instance of the system failing him because he kills himself for having to deal with the fallout of sex offender laws... but if he was 18 at the time, he's an adult, so there's no issue. He just has to live with it. Apparently that big divide of 17 to 18 goes from child to adult in most people's mind.

Nor was it confined to high-risk offenders or adults who targeted kids.

Wetterling began to talk to Ricky. He was “a young man with so much to contribute to the world,” she told me, but his attempts to lead a better life had time and again been thwarted by registration. Ricky’s letter also raised questions, for Wetterling, about the “Romeo and Juliet” problem—consensual teen-sex prosecutions. These included not just juveniles but also young adults, eighteen and older, who could be tried and sentenced accordingly.

If you're 18 and older, you're an adult by law. As such, are you not an adult targeting a kid, because you go after someone 17 or younger? Working as intended.

I'm going to be honest. A lot of those stories where people were underage and had their life ruined are heartbreaking. Its absolute shit, but this is the price we're paying for the way we handle so-called sexual offenses such as 'child grooming' (like the english footballer case), and so on.

The question is, at what age is the offender deserving of all the lifelong risks and psychological trauma of living day to day, and based on what age of their victim?

A 17 year old vic and an 18 year old perp?

A 17 year old vic and a 22 year old perp?

A 17 year old vic and a 30 year old perp?

A 17 year old vic and a 40 year old perp?

A 13 year old vic and a 12 year old perp?

A 13 year old vic and a 16 year old perp?

A 13 year old vic and a 17 year old perp?

A 13 year old vic and a 18 year old perp?

A 13 year old vic and a 24 year old perp?

When do you guys want someone to suffer lifelong consequences for sexual misconduct with what is commonly viewed as a child, or legally viewed as a child?

For edification: A guy showing his dick in public will be on a sex offender list alongside child raping murderers. That's the point I'm making. The catchall response is hugely disproportionate to some of the so called crimes being committed, and their kids are feeling the backlash of it, so they want to lighten it up just for 'children' (and 18-20ish legal adults).
