Even so, the report also finds that tech is on par with the national average once you look at other industries. After taking into account differences in education and experience, men working at tech companies overall make 5.9 percent more than women do, compared with a 5.4 percent difference across the US.

Apparently, men still work more hours than women in tech. Surprise.

After taking into account differences in education and experience,

I have become very suspicious that this is being even remotely corrected for.

If we accept studies that men tend to put in more hours at work - say 45 hours instead of women's typical 37.5 then over a year a man will have 250 more hours of experience.

Comparing a statistical average (guess) male with 5 years experience = 11250 hours

and a statistical average female with 5 years experience = 8750 hours

and you find that the male has the equivalent experience that the woman would have to work two more years to have.

Now, the real numbers are probably significantly different. However, having worked in software, guys drive the death march and women bail early - I know programmers with 5 years experience that easily put in the hours for 8 years in those 5 and their pay and position reflects that - they might be "equal in education and experience" on paper, but that's where it ends.

This is not to say that there aren't women that put in the long hours and deserve the pay and recognition. I just think, anecdotally and supported by studies, that it is less common.

the pay gap arument is moot, why? because after 60 years of very active political feminism....women are freely choosing to study what they want at school......they choose not to enter stems...because they're just not as interested in it as the level men are.....and this drives feminists bonkers. at 60/40 grad rates...this mythical gap should have disappeared long ago......funny how it hasn't.....and this drives feminists bonkers.

Yeah but in tech programs it's like 80/20 or 90/10 at some school s. People just don't realize how few women are entering tech. If you've been through CS school you would know. We had 4 women graduate in our class out of about 80 people

If your employer is paying you less on account of your gender sue them. I don't understand what else can be done.

Men need to be blamed more. After the men are thoroughly blamed and accused and blamed again, the laws of supply and demand will get suspended and women will finally fulfill their long-cherished dream of getting one dollar for a man's dollar. So when that man goes to spend his dollar on her? She can have a dollar of her very own to spend on herself as well.

It's called "equality". Look it up in the dictionary, shitlord.

All the software engineers are on different rates. It just depends which skill you have and how much they want you when you start at the company.

Contractors negotiate a daily rate which varies hugely. As for permanent positions if they are desperate for a particular skill (or think they are desperate) you can negotiate more. Apart form new grad intake no one is on the same salary.

I know a lot about this industry:

A degree is not a necessity at all. In the UK I would say about 70% of programmers do not have a degree at all.

You are only as good as your last job.

About half of all jobs in London are contractor jobs. £300 to £500 a day. Sometimes more.

It is very competitive.

You cannot hide being a crap software engineer for long, you get found out.

If you are a really crap programmer you go into management.

You have to stay up to date and the stuff you were doing 5 years ago is next to useless now.

There is always lots more to learn.

There is usually a skill (knowledge of a system, language) that is in demand at that point in time. But that heightened demand may only last 18 months.

The hours can be long.

The best qualification is to have a very logical mind, like solving puzzles and be good at maths.

I know a number of really good female programmers and they are all act like guys, ie none of that feminist crap, get on with the job, do not tend to wear makeup or short skirts, not hugely into their looks, usually date or marry other programmers. Thinking about it all the female software engineers I know are all really cool.

It is totally not an industry that you could leave for 4 years to have a child and then come back in. Your skills will be way out of date.

Oh look, this thread again.

"To shrink the gap, Glassdoor suggests policies lightening the burden of child and elderly care...".

They don't say it in the article explicitly, but its implied by this sentence that they're not taking into consideration hours worked. Moreover, I'm curious about what ideas Glassdoor has for these policies.

I've thought about this for a long time now, and I think that the argument that the people conducting the studies are trying to make is that there shouldn't be a gap, not that women are payed less than men for the same work. That last bit is added by sensationalist, feminist media and other garden variety science illiterates--I hope.

Charlie Munger made a good point which relates to this. He says one of the biggest problems in education is that academics aren't knowledgeable about basic ideas in fields outside their own area. This is how you end up with people in women's studies depts. seriously promulgating an absurd idea like a 20 something percent wage gap for equally productive workers in a free market economy. Anyone with a basic understanding of economics would see this isn't possible. In a free market there's no 28% cheaper source of coal or soybeans or any other input. Why would it be the case with labor? If this ever existed, and I'm not saying it couldn't for a short time, it would have been arbitraged away decades ago. Having women in the workplace isn't anything new at this point.

These people really believe that businesses in the U.S. are willing to close down a plant in the u.s. and open a new one in a foreign country if it saves them money, despite all the risks that entails, but are unwilling to hire women here when it could save them 20-30%.
