I have a friend who frequents that place fairly regularly. He loves it, obviously, but sadly, he tells me that there's been some shit going on with a change of ownership, and he's worried the new owners are going to change the venue substantially to be more "high class" and appealing to rich smokers, and that this will change its present customer mix, which is apparently pretty varied. He says, right now, it's been a classy place that's welcoming to people who don't fit traditionally "classy" molds—meaning plenty of dudes who might otherwise be labeled "hood" and who also frequent bars/clubs they're more associated with by society at large come there for a different experience and love it.

If he's right, it seems a sad loss of a venue that was breaking through class and race boundaries in a really positive way.

This is a fantastic essay in every way. Real people, no strawman caricatures. And a real understanding of male bonding that's almost alien it's so different from what's written everywhere else.

I think it's regrettable there aren't more examples of these types of groups and similar analyses. No one really teaches young guys about it, you have to figure it out for yourself, and you can only do that if you're open to growth or are lucky enough to fall in with a group when you're young. I can understand why that is though. Look at how powerful a thing that is, that millionaires, gays, Jews, ex-LEOs, and more can all come together and bond. Unity isn't exactly the direction our world is moving.

That was a beautiful story about a group of friends... who in no way way needed some sort of NO GIRLS ALLOWED sign to enjoy each other's company.

Cigar bars, like all places of public accommodation, admit females. Journalists have been writing stories about them for years. I think you missed the point, and frankly, I think the author made the same mistake. He looked at a group of friends who valued their bond and prioritized their time together and assumed it had something to do with escaping or hiding from females (even though half those guys are homosexuals). Nobody subjects women to that level of analysis when we get together.
