If you answered YES to these questions, help the cause and please participate in on our study of social attitudes and online behaviours.

I’m going to do it, but surely the purpose of research is to try and prove/disprove a hypothesis and not “help a cause”?

Purpose of Research Project: To gather information that will help us understand how social attitudes and preferences for different activities are related to online behaviors such as debating, trolling, and doxing.

… may appear to suggest that everyone writing on here is some kind of high school drop-out / emotionally retarded bigoted, racist etc.

And in fact on the INFORMED CONSENT sheet example questions that may be included in the actual survey are apparently

“Perhaps I shouldn’t have, but I never got tired of mocking certain classmates,”

and

“It’s probably a good thing that certain groups are at the top and other groups are at the bottom,”

So if these are in any way representative of what’s in the actual survey, this will probably end up being a paper of the kind that will end up being bemoaned on here 12 or more months from now.

^edit³ Well, I did it … I’m not going to say what was in the questions because that would be unfair to the researcher, but needless to say there’s some mighty bullshit in those questions of the “When did you stop beating your wife?” variety.

Yeah right, that sounds like authentic dinner party conversation among social psychologists at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Why don't you read it out in a Noo-Joisey accent to sound even more like an angry white man? My suspicion when I read this crass, condescending request is that you're trawling for rightwingers or gamergaters to participate in a study that will prove that they haven't stopped beating their wives.

The first set of questions ("I was purposely mean to some people in high school", "I have the right to push certain people around", etc) is from a sadism questionnaire.
The next set is to do with to what extent the test subject thinks in terms of social dominance and group pecking orders. Others have been to this subreddit before with that questionnaire. The next set of questions is supposed to measure (or rather to smear the participant with the diagnosis of) "ambivalent sexism".

The trolling questions put particular emphasis on trolling of feminist websites, and they escalate quickly - it's a slippery slope from arguing with feminists online to doxxing or harassing.

Participant Debriefing: Social Attitudes and Online Activities

Thank you very much for your participation! We are interested in how social attitudes and other preferences relate to online behaviors. For example, individuals tend to vary in their online activities, from commenting and debating to doxing. We want to learn how attitudes toward social groups of different status (including women) and preferences for activities such as watching mixed martial arts, or tricking or dominating others, relate to these online activities. Therefore, you completed measures of your attitudes toward social groups, attitudes toward women, and questions about your own activities and preferences.

Why study only males?

It just reminds me of that terrible study that asked men if they 'would force a women to have sex if there were no consequences' and then proceeded to manipulate the findings to demonize men. They didn't even have a survey for women IIRC.
