This is really a terrific article.

I am a bit saddened it's at a 3rd tier blog, I think it should see much larger distribution and/or be peer-reviewed and used in class.

I don't think chivalry has much to do with it. At least, it's not the root cause.

Amazingly, many historians attribute the birth of romantic love to chivalry, as if it didn't exist earlier or in those parts of the world where chivalry was not known.

I'm almost certain that favoring women in courts is also a more universal thing, that it existed before chivalry and outside western Europe.

I honestly think that people, and men in particular, find it very hard to treat cute -- and thus childlike -- persons the same way they treat ugly or robust - adultlike -- persons. It would be interesting to check out how much this is a contributing factor: do cute women get more lenient convictions, what about cute men?
