But if child support is actually for supporting the child, then a parent isn't actually saving money by trading increased custody for lower payments, as that parent is taking on the increased financial burden of custody.

Unless, of course, child support is way too high to begin with, and the custodial parent is actually geting more than necessary for the support of the child. Hmmm?
