Wouldn't surprise me. There's a million reasons to use rape to excuse yourself doing something socially unacceptable. We never got away from the witchcraft of the spanish inquisition or salem. Just changed the names.

And police in the UK dont pursue charges in 90% of cases, despite needing no evidence and a general aggressive stance of pursuing malicious rape claims. So that gives an idea of the scale of false accusations in the West.

As far as I can read, the 50% figure only refers to abuse of traditionalist, often Draconian legislation - abuse that most commenters, including the more progressive parts of feminism, appears to recognise.

Unfounded or downright malicious rape accusations obviously also occur, raising the false accusation rate to well over half - the kinds of figures we only get from jaded, outspoken police officers plagued and unavoidably also biased by bad experiences.

Perhaps it is the blatant nature of such abuse that makes India appears to be at the global forefront of widespread recognition of men's rights issue, despite being a highly traditionalist society with the severe cultural restrictions on women's chastity and men's responsibility that entails. Fascinating, at the very least.

Same with delhi.

53.2% of rape case filed are false according to Delhi Commission for Women(pro-female organization) for year 2013-14. These statistics are from "rape capital" Delhi. Interestingly the conviction rate of remaining rape cases fell from 54% to 22% after delhi gang rape incident.
