In many societies, men generally enjoy more opportunities, privileges and power than women, yet these multiple advantages do not translate into better health outcomes.

How odd that our theory of men leading all these privileged lives doesnt match any data along any social metric that anyone can find.

How much more likely to die are men than women as a result of risktaking behaviours?

How odd that with so much privilege and so much to look forward to so many men would choose to end their lives early.

In many countries, research suggests that women are more likely than men to use health services, although this disparity may reflect women’s increased use of services during their reproductive years.

In my country less women than men were going into STEM. We called it toxic femininity and told girls to "woman-up" and stop being defective; that the system was fine and it was them that was wrong. Just kidding, we totally upended the entire educational system in a massive institutional shift for the last three decades. We're literally paying anyone with a vagina to please for the love of God and country to study math. To even utter toxic femininity would be career suicide.

Several recent studies in Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe suggest that notions of masculinity not only increase the risk of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but they also inhibit men from getting tested for HIV, coming to terms with their HIV-positive status, taking instructions from nurses, and engaging in health-enabling behaviours.

You mean the same places in Africa where we're touting circumcision/genital mutilation as an effective treatment? No shit, Im not making that up. Its the same exact organization too I cant believe African men think health care isnt in their best interest.

Finally, the highly gendered nature of employment in all societies translates into men being more exposed to occupationally related morbidity and mortality than women.

It must be all that, "more opportunities, privileges and power than women" that men experience. Its literally so awesome working in a mine and waving all that patriarchal privilege around that their heart explodes.

Barker et al. have noted that “health programs often view men mainly as oppressors – self-centred, disinterested, or violent – instead of as complex subjects whose behaviours are influenced by gender and sexual norms”.

Holy shit! Where the fuck could they have gotten this idea that men were oppressors? Oh here it is right here promulgated by the World Health Organization and even as a central tenet of feminism.

The GBD 2010 study has, we hope, helped to raise awareness of the excess burden of morbidity and mortality in men. Concerted global action to reduce this burden could have a transformative social, health and economic impact. It is time to not only acknowledge the benefits of such action to men, but also to recognize and measure its potential benefits to women, children and society as a whole.

Well thank god it impacts women or it wouldnt be a problem at all.

Health literacy is a concept that send to be rolling out of the UN in association with the Ottawa charter of health promotion.

Men have arguably worse health literacy for a variety of reasons but for some reason the presentations I saw didn't mention anything about this.
