Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the majority of problems in India were more class issues than gender issues?

If you're lower caste you're not worth much (or the higher caste person who wronged you pays people off) and if you're in a rural area "law enforcement" is something that happens according to tribal elders, who often choose beatings and bizarre tests of 'virtue' for all involved.

Remember how big India is. It has twice as many people as America and Europe combined, and hundreds of unique cultures, all of which have their own problems.

Sort of, not really

The rural vs urban divide is true. The class issues are true. However, the caste issues are a different matter. being a "lower" caste is a privilege, not an impediment in terms of protection under law as well as economic progress

Can you explain a bit more about that? Given that the lowest caste are called the "untouchables" it seems like they're not thought of very highly.

Yes, and in areas where laws arent enforced thats an issue

However, in urban areas, where this is not the case, people from lower castes are entitled to a hard 50-70% quota of seats in govt run colleges (and these are REALLY selective colleges, IIRC their rejection rate is > 99% for non lower castes), to the point where they can get in by submitting a blank answer sheet sometimes (MCQ's with negative marking, and once in a while the cutoff for lower castes is negative)

Additionally, the same quota is applied in Govt jobs, and they are trying to get it applied in pvt jobs as well

And, talking about the actual law, any crime against someone from a lower caste is prosecuted with a much stricter penalty. Even if there is no proof the person know the victim was lower caste, or caste was a motivation

EDIT: btw, these are hard quotas, not tie breakers like american affirmative actions. You'll often see job openings like XX vacancies for SC\ST (backward castes) only since the non quota jobs dont have a vacancy, only the quota is not fully filled

Wow, thanks for info.

Do you think this is a change that's come purely from within the country itself, or do you think pressure from outside groups has brought it about?

AFAIK purely from within the country... (well, its part of the constitution, and suspends fundamental rights to benefit lower castes) it used to be 27% or so till 2007/8 and was hiked to 50% in 2008/9

not sure of the change in terms of laws, but lower castes are strong enough politically to get such stuff implemented, and make sure it never gets rolled back (and reservations work even more interestingly in elections : about 27% of all constituencies can only elect a lower caste candidate, while all castes compete in other areas, so lower castes are elected in areas with a majority of lower caste population)

Class is not equal to caste, though class is becoming the new caste

It doesn't surprise me that the Indian feminists dishonestly manipulate statistics in India as well.
