I think the way people glorify war in general is a heap of shit because the fact is both sides always do horrible things to each other no matter how much they try to cover it up with propaganda.

However, this is classic BBC behaving themselves when they are being watched or are dealing with a subject they don't care about, then posting up blatant propaganda and hit pieces when they think nobody is paying attention.

I happen to belong to a nation that fought both Soviets and Nazis and remained democratic and independent. I'm, how should I say this so that it doesn't look like I have something to brag about, I'm proud of my grandparents who achieved this huge feat. I'm not, God forbid, ashamed of them. I look up to them. I wish I had the same courage as they did if a new Stalin or Hitler rose.

If Hitler didn't get bogged down on the Eastern front, BBC would be broadcasting in Deutsche right now.

SO? there is no question the Russian's committed terrible rapes during WW2 across germany.

This isn't a men's rights related at all.

[–]192873982 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

There is also no question that the Americans committed terrible rapes during WW2 across Germany.

"Memorial to unknown rapist" would imply that EVERY russian soldier in WW2 committed rape in Germany, which is certainly wrong.

[–]Wargame4life -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

not on the same scale as the russians, it was notorious, or are you claiming that in ww2 there were sjw on the front lines?

[–]192873982 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

"When war is declared, truth is the first casualty", that's the most important lesson one should learn in history education. I don't deny the russian crimes, but american books will be silent on american crimes, that's just how the world works. Also my complaint was a logical one. Since the chance of the unknown soldier beeing a rapist is not 100%, we cannot be shure that he is one. It's that simple.

The biggest "war crime" the western allies did was not providing enough resources for the concentration camps and sending soviet or alleged soviet citizens "back" to the Soviet Union and often to their death.

The soviet side, on the other hand, was given a permission to kill and rape civilians, even children, and not only German civilians.

There is a reason why totalitarian dictatorships are considered morally corrupt.

[–]_LordFlies 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

No serious historian disputes the fact that the allies committed massive war crimes during WWII.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_war_crimes_during_World_War_II

It's also worth pointing out that the United States and Britain were supporters of fascism until Anglo-American interests became threatened. Churchill and Roosevelt both praised Mussolini and Franco. The primary support was not political however but economic. Western business leaders funnelled huge amounts of money to the fascist movement due to fear of rising communist movements and just unions in general.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago* (12 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I linked to that, too.

Churchill: "If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the devil in the House of Commons."

The devil, Hitler, Stalin, who cares. What matters is survival.

Fascists never mass murdered anybody. They were not nice people but they never mass murdered anybody. Nazis did.

Isn't there a book arguing that Roosevelt was a fascist at heart?

What turns peace loving men into killing and raping hordes, is the only thing that really matters. The answer is ... Communism and Nazism. What else?

Not democracy, fortunately.

[–]_LordFlies 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Fascists never gassed anybody. They were not nice people but they never gassed anybody. Nazis did.

Ironically, Churchill actually supported the use of chemical weapons on Iraqi civilians during the 20's. "I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes" - Churchill

What turns peace loving men into killing and raping hordes

Not democracy, fortunately

Sorry, but the idea that Western democracies don't have a history of mass slaughter and even genocide is simply false. Even conservative historians admit this. They may attempt to justify it but they admit it.

Apparently we are talking about different things. My question was: how to turn peaceful men into killing and raping - inhumane - hordes? My answer was: totalitarian dictatorship.

We all know that this answer is at least partly true, taking into account what Nazis and Soviets did.

We know that there have been incidents where soldiers of a democratic country have misbehaved. Misbehaved. Never ever can a true democratic country tell to, say, kill or rape women and children.

Never.

But that's what Hitlers and Stalin's regime did. "Kill and rape!"

How's the weather in St. Petersburg? Pretty much the same as here I suppose.

Google "School of the Americas" or "death squads."

[–]alblks -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"Kill and rape!"

It's wrong even speaking of Germans. There exists documents written by their army commanders condemning the atrocities SS death squads did. Soviets, unlike Nazis, NEVER have death squads and NEVER encourage violence to the innocents in ANY written form.

The atrocities certainly happened, it was fucking war after all, and we should examine them, remember and make sure it's never happen again -- but I never being able to get why people like you feel obliged to utter MERE LIES pursuing that goal.

Nazis are fascist.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Fascism was an Italian movement that never mass murdered anybody. Soviets lumped their opposition together as fascists and capitalists.

[–]TheLeftIncarnate 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Soviets were the hundreds of workers' councils in the immediate post-revolution period in Russia and did no such thing.

Most countries are morally bankrupt, some more than others. Stalin was definitely one of the worst humans to ever live on this planet. But the history we hear is still biased in favour of the americans. That does of course not mean they where as bad as stalin, but they still where bad, just as every country in war is bad.

If my country was attacked, I wouldn't care for the rights of enemies at all. If my country would attack, I would refuse to participate. That explains why russian soldiers acted more cruel to some degree, because unlike the USA, Russia was actually attacked with lots of russian casualities.

Today, I consider the USA one of the most morally bankrupt countries, with their death penalty, massive torture and rape by US soldiers.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

There are a lot of studies on this, you don't have to rely on how you feel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_war_crimes_during_World_War_II

I'm no big fan of the world police but facts are a separate issue.

[–]192873982 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You're naive if you really think that these studies are neutral.

How many civilian have been declared "resisting enemies" and killed, just because the involved soldiers where in the mood to kill some enemies? That of course goes for any war, not just WW2, and also for any country.

How many soldiers raised the white flag and where killed and not documented?

War is always a mess and there is never enough information to reconstruct what really happend. But in american movies, there is the american hero that comes to save everyone.

One example that just stood out:

Wiki: "It has been claimed that some U.S. soldiers raped Okinawan women during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945"

Of course there has been rape, there are always rapes in war. To be honest, US soldiers that are stationed in Japan still rape japanese women annually. The formulation of that sentence is almost cynical.

Remember: History is not scientific enough and therefore it shouldn't be trusted too much.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

If you don't believe in peer reviewed studies, what do you believe in? Honestly. I'm interested in the psychopathology of people who think that nothing can be known.

Anyways, Stalin's hordes were immoral, not as immoral as Hitler's hordes, but immoral nevertheless.

Do you happen to work in St Petersburg? It would explain a lot.

[–]192873982 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I believe in primary sources and I accept the inevitable fact that some things remain unknown.

Drawing conclusions from incomplete data leads to errors, unless we use probability, then we can say some things. But we don't even have enough data to get any probability from it. That means history is just a bunch of stories with a core of truth and a lot of decoration.

In what way were Stalins hordes less immoral than Hitlers? Do you mean the concentration camps? Because most people in Hitlers "hordes" didn't know much about it. Even if they heard things, they might have not believed it. Most people in Nazi German where not more immoral then you and me, it was only a few.

People from all sides have never been just evil or just good, any such view has always later been unmasked as propaganda.

No one sees himself as evil. I'm pretty sure that Hitler didn't think he was evil.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The Petrograd trolling factory could do better.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly, it's a well known fact although Russians don't want to acknowledge it because they want to own the "heroic" narrative of "the great patriotic war" and use it as propaganda. They were THE Soviets, they seem to say.

A documentary mentioned the mass rapes a few week ago on TV. My wife speculated that Stalin et co gave the soldiers the permission to rape as a "gift", something to wait for and give them guts to carry on.

I found the explanation repulsive. Could it be that masses of men really could consider raping a gift, something to wait for? So, I said that perhaps it was rather a revenge and a strategy, a way to strip the enemy of their fighting will, make them escape (as they did) towards the western allies.

Then again ...

It's a disturbing idea. In Wehrmacht many learned to love killing. In the Red Army they they were taught to love raping?

Those heroes ...
