The article portrayed it as inclusion in a community more than supervision. It mentioned helping to find a job and a home.

It's giving them something better to do than molest children.

Bored on a Friday night? Don't molest kids, play cribbage with your friends!

It shouldn't be rocket science.

I'm not really weighing in one way or another on the feasibility of this kind of supervision, but even the way you characterize it it's still just that.
And if the system is really a lifelong commitment to distract sexual predators, that sounds rather difficult to implement.

is there a TL;DR?

[–]bertreapot[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Basically, support groups from the community that help sex offenders reintegrate into society are an effective way to keep them from reoffending. But instead the laws isolate them, making it difficult to become a normal person, and resulting in recidivism.

I really feel sorry for people who have unchangeable, harmful, and violent sexual urges and fight with them every day to not hurt another person.

But frankly, I don't know how much I care about the people who have been shown that they cannot control themselves and hurt others for their own pleasure. I am a lot less willing to forgive the crimes wheres you directly harm someone else: murder, rape, assault, etc. because that person's second chance is being weighed against the happiness, psychological stability, or even lives of those around them.

The reason sex offenders feel the need to hurt people is lamentable, and it isn't fair that they were born with it. But like it or not, that is who they are. Being good people might be harder for them than others, but that's the hand they were dealt. As someone who has been addicted to substances, I know that one taste is all it takes and an addict can never be truly trust around their drug. Only, if an addict relapses, they hurt themselves. If these people relapse, they hurt others.

I would be much more interested in prevention than rehabilitation for this kind of offense.

People seem to think that rehabilitation is some type of forgiveness or sympathizing with the criminal. In actuality, it is prevention of reoffense.

Punishing someone does nothing to help the root cause nor does it provide the criminal with another path. If you're trying to train your dog, you don't keep it locked inside all day, ignoring it, and beating it every time it goes pee in the house, because eventually, that will become the dog's way to get attention.

Study after study after study after study shows that positive reinforcement works FAR better than negative reinforcement. If someone is crying out for attention, then only giving them the attention they want when they do something bad will only encourage further harm.

If you want to stop crime, don't punish someone after they do it, prevent them from doing it in the first place.

If you want to stop sex offenders then make them aware that "hey, there are people suffering in the exact same way you are, and you are welcome to join them and they can support each other and keep any harm from coming to anyone." But that is not the case, people are left to struggle alone with their own demons until it finally boils over and you end up destroying two lives.

Nothing to contribute here, just want to say that was very well put.

[–]galtthedestroyer 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The article very clearly states that sex offenders don't behave like addicts.

Do you care to reduce the likelihood of re-offence? Is your love of your children higher than your hatred of the pedophile?

If so, then do whatever it takes to make sure they don't re-offend. Don't "lock 'em up and throw away the key". Don't punish them forever. Don't push them to the edges of society where they have no hope and no choices.

Give them better options. Hell, it's probably cheaper to pay them to pick up garbage off of the side of the highway, than it is to put them back in jail. I know I'd rather wave at a pedophile picking up coke cans as I drive past... than wondering if he's got nothing better to do than molest my kids.
