Question Regarding Paternity Testing

It is important to avoid hyperbole.

There are defenses to outright paternity fraud. Unmarried fathers can insist on a paternity test prior to being named the father. A mother can't simply put anyone down on a birth certificate and start collecting. The mother is supposed to supply supporting information as part of filing a paternity suit. A paternity test is simply part of that process.

When things work correctly it's supposed to look like this:

Mother a files statement saying 'I had a relationship with Bonzo during this timeframe. He is the father of Junior. I ask the court to place him on the birth certificate'.
Bonzo gets a court summons. Where he is given the opportunity to acknowledge paternity or submit to a court ordered paternity test. He is also given an opportunity to say 'there was no relationship, we've never met etc...' along with his own supporting evidence.
Paternity test comes back providing additional evidence to the court.
Court decides if Bonzo is legally the father based on the evidence provided by both sides.

The problems occur at the margins of this process. What if Bonzo can't be found for testing? What if Bonzo is being pressured to sign an acknowledgement of paternity outside of a court setting? What if Bonzo is being mislead about what acknowledging paternity means? Often these gaps in the process are where men get taken advantage of. This all ties into the larger issue of Father's rights in general. The process around establishing paternity is where 90% of the problems are.

While I agree, I have to wonder why a man who is named the father wouldn't immediately take the child for the test.

How on earth would he KNOW he was named the father? Noone needs his consent to put his name there. It's currently 100% up to the mother.

In theory, most states will try to track down and notify men who are named as fathers and who are being held responsible for child support. There is a short period where paternity can be contested. After that, you're out of luck and responsible for the kid until it's 18. Regardless of who the father is. Even if noone was able to contact you because you moved, joined the Army, whatever.

You dont need to take a kid in for testing, you can mail in two oral swabs, pay like 300$, get your answer via email, easy peasy and no one has to know, any guy should do this just in case.
