I was taking a bus home wearing a formal suit. (Not a big detail but not badly dressed.) I got on the city bus and took a seat in the front. Facing me was a row of three seats- white girl in the first, empty seat, black lady. My room had an old white guy, empty seat, me.
I saw an old black lady with crutches get on. I'm into helping a fellow citizen and thought she might want to rest her crutches on an empty seat so i crossed the aisle and took the middle seat, leaving two empties.
The white girl next to me immediately got up and took the seat I was in. So the lady on crutches took the seat she was in and sat next to me with nowhere to put them.
All I could assume was the girl thought I was moving to hit on her. Bitch please. But what do you do, say get back in that seat? Until she got off I just sat there fuming about her leap to conclusions and self centeredness. And I realized it was kind of meaningful that she took the other lady's place to satisfy her own (false) concern.
