It's all about making it look like women have it so hard.

It's frightening how much power these groups have to convince people of the complete opposite of the truth when the evidence is literally right in front of them.

There is better information at this link. Some of it is just better reporting, but hypertension, diabetes and heart disease have also drastically increased in U.S. pregnant women. Frankly, far too many women of child bearing age are grossly over-weight. Pregnancy puts an additional and significant strain on the body. We also have a huge infertility industry, pumping older women full of hormones to achieve and maintain fragile pregnancies. Older women are more likely to have significant pregnancy complications including death. Infertility treatments often lead to births of multiples, (twins or higher), drastically increasing the risk of complications and death. The U.S. has one of the highest rates of c-sections in the world, also more likely to cause complications and death. There are a very few health conditions that do develop as a result of pregnancy or are significantly accelerated by pregnancy which can lead to a death later than six weeks after childbirth. Some examples are congestive heart failure and cancer that can't be treated during the pregnancy.

If you look at the trends from 1985 to present they include ever increasing amounts of the above. Fatter women, older mothers, infertility treatments, multiple births, c-sections, better cancer detection. Paradoxically, it is also our excellent health care system that allows very sick children to survive long enough to reproduce and risk pregnancy related death. Children with severe heart problems, childhood cancer victims with permanent organ damage from chemotherapy, children with organ transplants, even cystic fibrosis patients are growing up and getting pregnant.

Then we have this kind of unique American attitude that resists rationing health care. Cost and risk be damned, many Americans expect and demand heroic efforts. This leads to both the initiation and the continuation of ill-advised unhealthy pregnancies with predictable increases in mortality.

It's almost certainly reporting bias that leads to the bulk of these discrepancies, not much having to do with actual death rates.

To say that actual death rates from pregnancy have more than doubled in the US over the last 30 years is a laughable proposition.

Oddly, the entire reason why government bureaucrats have been clamoring for more intensive efforts to document "pregnancy related deaths" in recent decades is to capture more cases. Now, the same people are using rising reporting rates to rent-seek and pussy-ache by claiming the rates are increasing. Just the usually "look at me" baloney.
