So on a hunch I decided to try and find what proportion of girls vs boys among Syrian refugees, are able to attend school. I figured the boys were probably worse off because everyone loves to protect girls more.

Sure enough I could find nothing about the gender mix which would have been paraded front page if girls were worse off. Eventually found this article on Syrian refugees in Jordan (Malala's school is in Lebanon) which confirmed:

“In a lot of cases young sons have to earn the income for the family in order to survive,” says Salam Kanaan, Country Director for CARE Jordan. CARE’s study shows that only 52 percent of Syrian refugee boys are currently attending school (compared with 62 percent of girls). In Lebanon, the number is even lower, with just 30 percent of Syrian refugee children being enrolled in school

As I pointed out in the article on /r/News, this doesn't account for how many more young men are fighting in the civil war in Syria as child soldiers because they are percentage figures and don't account for boys that are simply not in Jordan. Other articles mention how girls are especially badly effected because of "fears" they may be in danger (as opposed to actual attacks, which I assume effects the boys more). So the usual.

Found a more up to date article by the same group, and conditions are less sexist though still boys lag behind girls.

Similar to CARE’s 2014 assessment, a higher percentage of boys (38 percent) than girls (33 percent) were out-of-school. Boys were more likely to be withdrawn from school than girls in order to engage in employment; 19 percent of adolescent boys (age 15-18) had dropped out of school to work, (while adolescent girls are more likely to leave school when they are engaged to marry).

Again this doesn't count any young men who are fighting in the civil war in Syria, because they are not in Jordan.
