The title isn't quite right. The man wasn't found innocent - he was found "not guilty'. He had been already been found guilty, but he successfully appealed because his lawyer successfully argued that DNA evidence on the victim's underwear was inadmissible.

It kinda sounds like he did it, but got off on a technicality. I actually do take comfort in knowing that at least the victim got to share her story - even though the accused needs to be set free despite likely being guilty.

Good grief...

Let's assume for the sake of hypothetical discussion that the defendant did indeed sexually assault the girl in question. You serve justice by GETTING THE PROSECUTION'S CASE RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, not by re-trying (trialing?) the case until you get the verdict you want. Apparently the case and the final verdict has been 'devastating' for the family of the girl - this is the prosecution's fault, nobody else's.

Regardless of whether or not the defendant really did the crime, in the judicial process I can't see how he did anything wrong. The first trial he was acquitted by a hung jury, after the second trial he argued successfully that his defense failed to include statements of his character, the third trial the defense argued successfully that the DNA evidence ought to be excluded.

Your headline is not only misleading, in that no one found him "innocent," but he had been convicted, which was overturned, and in a subsequent trial the DNA on the girl's underwear, belonging to him, was excluded. Soooooo, he's actually probably guilty and got off on a technicality.
