My situation: One night stand with a girl. Tells me she's pregnant and I am the father. We dated through pregnancy. Broke up towards the end because we didn't get along. Agreed to be mutual for the child. After child is born I petition for a paternity test. She even acknowledges someone else could be the father. My name is left off the birth certificate (Arizona Law if alleged father questions paternity at birth). Results are back 2 1/2 months later. I am the father! Mother hasn't allowed me to see the child but a couple of times and has ignored my requests to talk or to see the child. Not much I can do not having my name on the birth certificate.

How do I choose a lawyer??? I know it's hard for a father to gain custody in a lot of states. I don't want to end up overpaying for one if the battle is already lost.

I just want my son to be able to stay with me at least 2 days a week and for me to be able to see him whenever I can.

I talked to lawyer who starts with a $2500 retainment... He's experience in family law and seems like someone who could help me out. (How does retainment work? Are there fees on top of that?)

I was also referred to a group that will handle child custody for a $500 flat fee....

Any advice on what my options are will help... I am 26 years old working in the service industry living in Phoenix, AZ with no family for support. I will spend whatever money is needed to be with my son but at the same time I would rather not spend it on a lawyer and end up spending it on him.
