I recently moved to another state to live with my parents for the summer before I start law school in the fall. Also living with them is my 21 year old brother (I’m 23) who has made my parents’ life a living hell for years. He has borderline personality disorder, which for those who don’t know, is pretty impossible to deal with. He lies, steals, blows up and can never take responsibility or show remorse (never date a girl with borderline btw).
He moved down with my parents a year and a half ago to get off heroin, and almost every day since has raised hell, screaming, slamming shit and calling my parents every name in the book. He’s gotten a couple of jobs since he’s been here but he hasn’t been able to hold them down for more than 2 weeks. The cops have been called multiple times over the years, and he’s been hospitalized a couple times after being deemed mentally ill and dangerous to himself and others. My parents have kicked him out before, but since they recently moved to a new state the only place he has to go is a drug house. They’ve always caved and let him come back.
Last night shit hit the fan and my dad finally snapped. He ended up strangling him Homer Simpson style and I had to rip him off. My brother started clawing my face and arms so I lost it myself (which I regret) and messed up his jaw. Cops were called, he bailed. My dad bears most of the responsibility for letting it get to this point. He was only raised by his mom, which absolutely affected the way he parented, and which allowed things to get to where they are today.
My parents don’t know wtf to do and have been looking to me for advice. If they let him stay, it’s hard to imagine it staying peaceful. If they kick him out for good, I’m confident he’ll be dead within a couple years. He’s already went to the ER after speedballing and he’s bound to OD if he’s homeless in a new state with nothing to live for. Though at this point, I’m not sure if there’s another option. He belongs in a mental hospital and/or rehab but he refuses because he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with him. What’s more frustrating is he actually got a job and starts today.
Sorry if this is long, depressing and off topic. I just thought this community might have some honest insight for me or my parents.
