I've been pleased to feel a slight change in my community's attitude towards this issue. Article comments everywhere will, of course, bring out the worst kinds of idiots into the public eye, but here, IRL, people are seeing this story off the net, and expressing outrage and disgust over Mahoney's actions.

The word on the street generally follows the same line: This is creepy. People who sleep with underage kids are creepy, and the fact that a woman is doing this does not excuse that creepiness.

It's a relief to see such a change in attitude quite suddenly, because for awhile there, not many people ever took the time to think about how disgusting double standards can be.

personally, i think that 16 is old enough to make decisions. "do i want this sex? ok sure". like i understand that it's a no-no because she's in a position of power over him, which is definitely bad. that said, i'd still hit it.

Humanity is sick, and it is because of this hatred of sexual activity when consensual that makes us sick. I mean, if they lived in NJ and she wasn't a gym teacher it would be legal. If anything she should be fired, that's it.

I got head from my former calc TA in my senior year of high school, and I was 17. Although it is technically "rape", I don't think she deserves any jail time. It's not like the student didn't agree to it.
