And let’s hope that a parliamentary debate can answer the puzzling and so far unanswered question: why on earth would the government give Elsie Women’s Refuge to the Catholic Church?

Could it possibly be because the government realized it can't keep funneling millions and millions of taxpayer dollars into shelters that don't even pretend to care about half the population? While I disagree with pretty close to everything the Catholic Church does, they seem to be a near limitless supply of funds.

Well, at least men will get some help with domestic violence.

But I think the government needs to hold these new administrators accountable for making sure everyone has an equal share of the resources involved.

I'm not going to assume the worst, but they need to make sure men, women and families all have proper services.

So the sexist bigot gravy train has come under the axe of government cuts somewhat and in the process they had to pretend they were going to serve male clients too - because of course the law is written gender neutrally (I assume). I have to wonder if they will actually bother to give any services to the men or will they pretend there are no homeless men in existence as they always pretend there are no male victims of domestic violence?

Got to laugh at the howling over losing "their" shelter - which of course was wholly owned and funded by the tax payers not feminists at all. hey feminists maybe you lost the bid because you have no experience treating half the problem because --ewww men?

Incredible. Am I understanding this article correctly?

Domestic Violence NSW Service Management used to receive state funds to run 12 different shelters providing women-only services.

Recently, the government changed its tune. Rather than providing funding tied to services that were women-only, the funding was tied to servicing different regions, without regard to sex.

Rather than continuing to accept these government funds, and taking on homeless males with children, it sounds to me like Domestic Violence NSW Service Management instead chose to take their ball and go home -- "give" the shelters to different large religious charities or, in the case of two of them the Catholic church.

Is my interpretation of what she is saying here correct?

Why else would they "give" the services to churches and "large religious charities?"

So my question then, is will these "large religious charities" and the Catholic church take money from the government to run these services they acquired from Domestic Violence NSW Service Management, and expand their coverage to homeless men with children? Alternatively, they could continue to run the shelters as women-only shelters, without using government money.

Or is there some other possibility that I'm not aware of?

In other words, perhaps the shelters were given away and will begin to take on male clients. But it's also possible that the shelters were given away to other charities, precisely so that they could continue to operate as women-only shelters.

If the latter is true, it's interesting to me, because it suggests that the shelters could be so antagonistic to men, that they would rather operate under a religious umbrella that they don't necessarily agree with, than provide services irrespective of gender.
