Choosing an attorney.

I interviewed three before I chose one. Part of it was cost.

But the other was how they listened and empathized. Basically do I feel like this attorney will best represent my interests or will they just roll over and go through the motions.

The best advice I can give you is find someone who you truly believe will advocate for you and who is willing to actually fight. I had to fire my first attorney during my divorce because they ended up making me feel like I was responsible for everything. I felt like they were almost on the other side frankly. Long story short, trust your gut and get ready to fight. If they’re not going to fight with you, find someone who will.

When you speak with them, make sure they really take the time to get to know you and your situation. If you get the good vibe like they’re gonna stick by you and hold the fort for you - do them. Even if you have a small gut feeling like they’re gonna give in for no reason then don’t. Many times lawyers won’t fight as hard for men and I was super lucky I had a lawyer (who was even a woman) who fought for me and even told her lawyer that I was being super reasonable and my ex wife was absolutely not. I had my ducks in a row, tho, so make sure you do too and that you close any loops you think she will exploit. Make it so the lawyers on both sides say it’s more worth going it your way, the reasonable way, but that you get what’s yours fairly and not because she is making shit up. She can say all she wants but if you’re even keeled, you’ll do fine. Mine tried everything but couldn’t and we were done in 6 months. Here to answer any other questions.

Decide on the Attorney that is going to be bluntly honest. The one that says that this divorce is all about the Benjamin’s. The one who doesn’t care one iota about your feelings or you life story. The one who looks at only 3 things. Assets. Debts. And child custody.

That’s what I did and I made out like a bandit in my divorce.

Oh and you want someone that’s gonna push back and prevent you from making a bad decision. At times it’s easy just to throw your hands in the air and say F it. You want an attorney who will steer you away from irrational decisions.
