Yes. At worst, you will learn something to make you a better parent. At best, you will look like the better parent.

EDIT: Wait, I just read your username. If your ex is a Narc, then be very careful that anything that she learns in the course (assuming that she is also going to take the course), may be used against you.

For example, co-parenting courses often teach parent to 'not make their kids mini-spies' or to not act like 'Disney parents'. My narc ex interviews our children every time they return to her home. Also, she takes them on vacations and gifts them like crazy just 'to show them her love'.

Be careful with narcs. They are always the victim or hero in every story, never the villain.

Good lawyer question. You can take the abc’s of parenting through Coursera though and I guarantee it will make you a better parent and enjoy your kids more.

Yes, definitely. But do it for yourself as much as the kids and the courts. Most states will easily grant 50/50 without much reserve as long as you both have similar work schedules and keep the kids in same school district.

Dealing with narcs is a whole different bag and i’m not an attorney. Your stbx sounds very controlling and like she takes pleasure in causing you distress over working too hard in order to just see your son. Document everything. All of the hoops she has made you jump through. A judge should see this type of behavior as detrimental to your son and highly manipulative. Some of it, you will have to live with, because when the child is not in your care the other party can do anything (especially if they have a vagina) short of endangering the child and get away with it without consequences.

What the judge won’t want to see is a bunch of “perceived” grievances - like, “I had to re-schedule my own meeting with the teacher”. However, constantly changing plans at the last minute that cause you to miss important moments, that will not be looked upon favorably, especially when you are making a strong effort to stay in your son’s life. Recommend documenting every time you have your son with you and taking pictures. There are apps to help make this easy, and the data is able to be printed out prior to court appearances and is admissible in court (from what I’ve heard).

If your stbx has temporary full custody, not much can be done until you go to court. She’s most likely trying to build a case for full or majority custody of your son, so she will want to maintain full custody for an extended period of time before going to trial. If you and your stbx were on the same page - you would be talking about 50/50 and seeing him more regularly. Don’t let her lead you on by agreeing to small things while she holds firm on 70/30 custody.

Document everything, and talk to a good attorney that has experience with the court in your area and go no contact. Let the lawyers bleed her out slowly until she gives some ground. Don’t let up on her - narcs are evil and twisted. Fight hard for what you WANT because shit doesn’t get any easier after the divorce is final. That’s a pipe dream they like to sell you on. Be ruthless - fight.
